摘要:
AbstractThis research evaluates the impact of two aquatic programmes (conventional and experimental) on self‐esteem and functional independence of 20 adolescents with cerebral palsy. Impact was examined through statistical analyses of data collected at baseline (T1), post‐test (T2) and nine months after the end of aquatic programmes (T3). Significant relationships were found between self‐esteem, functional independence and aquatic activities. The results confirm the potential value of aquatic programmes to improve the socio‐emotional development and functional independence of this population. Despite the positive increase of the subjects' scores, the findings suggest that the experimental aquatic programme was not sufficiently powerful to be significantly different from the conventional program, in terms of gains in self‐esteem and functional independence. The implications of these findings and the usefulness of aquatic activities as meaningful therapy for adolescents with cerebral palsy are discussed. Directions for future studies are also proposed. 摘要:
AbstractThis paper provides an overview of an innovative course in community occupational therapy. The course emphasises and prepares students for community practice in an environment profoundly affected by ongoing changes in Canada's health and social systems. Its rationale, objectives, structure, and content are outlined. In particular, the paper highlights the in vivo, problem‐based component of the course, which centres around community‐based fieldwork. A summary of the major results of the evaluation of the course is also presented. Although this course was designed for Canadian occupational therapy students, much of the material presented is potentially useful to educators of occupational therapy students in other countries. 摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to compare self‐report and informant report of Tactile Defensiveness (TD) for 43 Israeli children aged 4 years 7 months to 10 years old. The Touch Inventory for Elementary School‐Aged Children (TIE) was used for the child's self‐report and a modified version of the TIE questionnaire used for the parent's (informant) report. The scores on both the original TIE and the modified parent's version were then compared with an occupational therapist's rating of the degree of the child's tactile responsivity. Statistically, no significant correlation was found between the parent's report and the child's report. There was, however, a statistically significant correlation between the child's report and the therapist's evaluation of his or her tactile defensiveness. No statistically significant correlation was found between the parent's report and the therapist's evaluation. These results suggest that the child should also be considered a useful source of information in the assessment of the TD syndrome. Copyright © 1996 Whurr Publishe

摘要:
AbstractJuvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a frequent source of chronic illness and disability in childhood. Traditional clinical assessment of clients with JRA include measures of joint deformity, range of motion, duration of morning stiffness, pain and strength. In many instances, these traditional measures have little or no significance or relevance to paediatric clients and their parents whereas functional skills used in every day living are more likely to be meaningful. Reliable, valid and sensitive measures of function are an essential part of the holistic care and occupational therapy management of paediatric clients with JRA. Several self‐report functional instruments are now available which measure a child's or adolescent's functional abilities. In this paper, the impact of JRA on functional development, JRA and functional assessment and specific types of functional measures that occupational therapy personnel can use with clients with JRA will be discussed. It is imperative to identify which functional measures can be effectively used in the clinical setting with paediatric clients diagnosed with JRA. Copyright © 1996 Whurr Publishers L

摘要:
AbstractThe therapeutic skateboard in a case study, utilising electromyography (EMG) in the analysis of an assistive activity, is presented. The EMG levels of eight shoulder muscles during horizontal adduction and abduction were studied. Three conditions were analysed: the arm supported by a therapeutic skate, a five‐pound weight belt on the supported arm and the non‐assistive condition where the arm was unsupported. It was found that:1The therapeutic skate activity demanded little movement (3.8–48%) from the shoulder muscles and is suitable for early mobilisation.2The skateboard assists primarily the stabilisers in both horizontal abduction and adduction.3Addition of weights was a gentle upgrading activity creating a small increase in the eight muscles being monitored.
