摘要:
Applications of electronic data interchange (EDI) are found today with increasing frequency in the purchasing community. As its use increases, EDI exerts a noticeable influence on purchasing activities. The use of EDI appears to improve vendor relationships and to increase purchasing productivity without changing the basic nature of the purchasing process. A widespread foundation for the implementation of EDI now exists in a number of industries; hence, the use of EDI is expected to grow significantly. Both purchasing and supplier management should be prepared to become familiar with EDI concepts and to explore potential applications of EDI in their own organizations.

摘要:
The relationship between buyers and design engineers during the development of a new product exerts a strong influence on the finished product's quality and, hence, its ability to achieve market share. Equally important is the impact this relationship has on the product's cost and its contribution to a firm's profit. There is a widely held belief that a buyer's technical knowledge and “people skills” play a key role in the success of this purchasing‐engineering interface. This article investigates personal characteristics and experiences of buyers who interface with design engineering personnel in an effort to identify variables that correlate with successful relations. The results of the study should assist purchasing managers in selecting and developing appropriate training for individuals who have the potential to interface successfully with design personnel.

摘要:
JIT purchasing concepts can provide competitive advantages to firms in non‐manufacturing industries, as well as to those in manufacturing industries. Preliminary results obtained from research conducted with a large firm in the communications business indicate significant benefits—improved internal and external communications, improved supplier performance, and warehouse space requirement reductions. The specific steps followed in achieving these results, from development through implementation of the program, are discussed in this article. Differences and similarities of applications in non‐manufacturing and manufacturing environments are explored as the authors take the reader through this emerging process.

摘要:
A study of three hundred and two buyers in mid‐western firms revealed that, overall, successful purchasing performance is independent of the ability to negotiate price concessions. These results refute the findings of several earlier research studies with respect to the relationship of Machiavellianism and successful buying performance. In contrast with previous findings, this study found that buyers who were less Machiavellian than the average individual were perceived to be the most successful. High performing buyers were highly motivated, satisfied with their jobs, and certain of what constituted good performance.

摘要:
Major capital equipment acquisitions present a series of unique challenges to a buyer. Factors that typically complicate the decision include technical operating differences in equipment, difficulties in defining specific operating requirements, and evaluation of the various cost factors that compose the life‐cycle cost for each equipment alternative. In this article, a conceptual model is developed to facilitate the evaluation of capital equipment alternatives in a consistent and structured fashion. The analysis involves both qualitative and quantitative data, including technical, logistical, and operating factors, as well as life‐cycle cost data. The article also presents a series of audit steps, or checkpoints, useful to a buyer in analyzing the underlying data—and it introduces an approach for dealing with the uncertainty in cost and benefit stream calculations which characterizes many major capital equipment acquisitions.
