SummaryThe immune response of chickens to goat erythrocytes has been examined. The H line selected for high competence of graft‐versus‐host reaction (GVHR) showed higher immune responses than the L line selected for low GVHR competence. It appeared also that immune responses were controlled by theBblood group locus, which is the major histocompatibility locus in chickens. SummaryElectrophoretic analysis of 794 individual samples of water buffalo hemoglobin shows the presence of three phenotypes, AA, AB and BB. Phenotype AA has only the fast hemoglobin (Hb‐fast). SummaryFour reproductively isolated populations of the Australian bush‐rat,Rattus fuscipes greyii, are polymorphic for electrophoretic variants of the mitochondrial enzyme, NADP‐dependent iso‐citrate dehydrogenase (M‐Idh). The electrophoretic patterns of M‐Idh and a small amount of breeding data are in agreement with the hypothesis that the variation is controlled by two alleles at an autosomal locus,Idh‐2.In three relatively large populations, the proportion of heterozygotes at theIdh‐2locus ranges from 0.07 to 0.23, while on a small off‐shore island it is 0.60. In this latter population there is an excess of heterozygotes which is on the borderline of statistical significance, suggesting that heterotic selection may be maintaining the polymorphism. Populations on eight other small islands are monomorphic for the allele which is the most frequent in the large populations. In most species M‐Idh is less variable than most other enzymic proteins and the results presented here constitute one of the few published examples of an extensive M

SummarySix antigens detectable by the complement‐dependent lymphocytotoxic technique were determined in pigs by six groups of alloimmune sera. It was confirmed that these specificities are controlled by the main histocompatibility region (SL‐A). SummaryIn fish of the family Cyprinidae extensive polymorphism and heterogeneity of serum transferrins were found. Ten variants of transferrins were detected in barbel, 9 in dace and bleak, 7 in chub and bream, 6 in rudd, 5 in roach, white bream, silver carp, big head and crucian carp, 3 in tench, and 2 variants in nase, ide and goldfish. All the variants observed bound radioactive iron. The phenotype patterns indicated a simple genetic determination, by a set of codominant alleles at one locus, and this even in tetraploid species. Transferrins of some species were partly isolated. The transferrins of all 22 species analysed were heterogeneous and homozygous pheno‐types had 1 to 6 zones of various intensities, binding59Fe. In barbel both single‐zone and two‐zone variants were present and transferrins of roach had variable heterogeneity. Sialic acid was found only in transferrins of silver carp, big head and in the two‐zone variants of barbel. SummarySix plasma eserine resistant esterase phenotypes were observed in a population of 1438 dogs consisting of 38 breeds. Analysis of parentage records of the dogs examined revealed that the phenotypic variation of eserine resistant esterases was controlled by 3 codominant allelesEsA,EsBandEsCat one autosomal locus.
