SummaryPolymorphic prealbumins (Pa A, Pa AB and Pa B) from hen's egg yolk (Gallus gallusL.) were isolated by gel filtration. Prealbumin was homogeneous on immunoelectro‐phoresis, gel filtration, and ion‐exchange chromatography, but heterogeneous on starch gel electrophoresis (five bands). The heterogeneity could be removed by neuraminidase treatment. Some physical and chemical properties were determined, namely molecular weight (19,500), N‐terminal amino acid (aspartic acid), isoelectric point (pH 4.6‐4.7), A1%1cm,280nmvalue (18.5), absorption spectrum, solubility at different conditions, and the effect of heating. SummaryThe effect of the red cell antibody, anti‐Ea, on the red cells of piglets in four litters was studied. Although the antibody was absorbed from the colostrum by all the piglets, it had little effect on their packed cell volume, haemoglobin and red cell counts, and no differences were noted between Ea‐positive and Ea‐negative piglets in the same litter, despite the fact that red cells of the former were positive for the direct Coomb's test for up to a week after birth.Anti‐Ea was not detected in the serum of Ea‐positive piglets, all of it apparently being taken up by their red cells, unlike the Ea‐negative ones, in whose serum anti‐Ea could be detected for up to fifteen

SummaryBy a variety of electrophoretic procedures it has been found thatGallus gallus, whether as jungle fowl or as chickens, differs consistently from Sonnerat's jungle fowl,G. sonnerati, in three egg white proteins: G3ovoglobulin, G2ovoglobulin and glutamyl peptidase. The electrophoretic patterns of egg white hybrids betweenG. gallusandG. sonneratiare identical to those obtained after simpiy mixing the egg whites; there is no evidence for hybrid protein zones. Although Japanese data on serum amylase can be interpreted as indicating introgressive hybridization in the origin of the domestic fowl, so far the egg protein data are negative in this respect.
