SummarySix regions of esterase activity designated I to VI were resolved from liver extracts of chickens by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. These esterases were further characterized on the basis of their substrate affinities and differential responses to various inhibitors.Genetic variation was found in esterases of region VI which appeared to be ali‐esterase. Four phenotypes, A, B, AB and O, were observed. These phenotypes were shown to be controlled by one autosomal locus, designatedEs‐3, with allelesEs‐3A,Es‐3BandEs‐3O. SummaryTransferrin types and glutathione (GSH) levels were determined for 38 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatto). Eight transferrin alleles were found: their gene frequencies were: TfA0.04, Tfc0.50, TfD0.03, TfD0.09, TF 0.11, TF 0.05, TfG0.11, and TfH' 0.08. The 16 phenotypes found and the number of each was: Tf AC 3, Tf CC 9, Tf CD‘ 2, Tf CD 2, Tf CF 5, Tf CF 3, Tf CH’ 3, Tf CG 2, Tf D'D‘ 1, Tf D'F 1, Tf D'G 1, TfD'H’ l, TfFG2, TfF'G ‘l.TfCG l.and Tf H'H’ 1.Mean GSH level was 310.6 mg/100 ml red cells. The Tf CC group had significantly lower GSH levels than Tfcheterozygotes or non‐Tfchomozygotes. The Tfcheterozygotes had significantly lower GSH levels than non‐Tfchomozygotes. Tfc, TfD' and TF alleles were associated with lower GSH levels. Glutathione levels were higher in older animals and were higher in September than in December. Sex differences in glutathione levels

SummaryPorcine submaxillary mucins (PSM) were classified as A, H, AH, and — types according to their ability to inhibit the hemagglutination of human blood group systems. Of 210 glands examined, the following blood group distribution was observed: 35% A, 35% H, 1% AH, and 29%—. The A‐type mucin was an effective inhibitor at microgram concentrations, whereas the H‐types showed considerably weaker hemagglutination inhibition.Rabbit antisera to the A and H mucins could be used for typing of human blood groups A and H; no cross‐reactivity was observed with the other types. The A‐type PSM antisera were adsorbed by human red blood cells of the A type only. Immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoretic studies of rabbit antisera to crude mucins revealed many antigenic components, but antisera to purified mucin preparations usually developed only two precipitin bands, one of which showed up only after staining for proteins.PSM was prepared from individual glands of known blood group types by a slight modification of a previously described method. Chemical analyses showed that the variation in composition of individual glands within a given blood group type was larger than could be attributable to experimental error. SummaryThe cholinesterase activity in horse serum was shown to be controlled by four co‐dominant autosomal alleles,ChA,ChB, ChcandChD. SummaryPolymorphism of serum transferrins in Siluridae(Ictalurus melas) was found by using starch gel electrophoresis of sera previously labelled with radioactive iron (59Fe).This polymorphism is based on the existence of 4 types of transferrins having different electrophoresis mobilities: types A, B, C and D. The types correspond with alleles at a single locus. Out of 10 theoretically possible phenotypes, 9 were observed by studying 140 individuals. These phenotypes differ between populations in two ponds in Sologne, France.

SummaryHomozygous transferrins of adult cattle are made up of two strong pairs and one weak pair of protein bands on starch gel electrophoresis. Foetal transferrins have only the slower band of each pair with the fastest band of the three being much stronger than in the adult type. Before term the second band of each pair begins to develop and at the same time the fastest pair becomes weaker – attaining the adult type by term or soon after. SummaryPolymorphisms of Holstein heifers from ten state‐owned dairy herds were compared with their birth weights and four measures of body size taken at 3, 6, and 12 months of age, and three months after first calving. The eleven polymorphic systems included the A, B, FV, J, L, S and Z blood group systems, the serum transferrins, and the β‐lactoglobulin, αs1‐casein, and β‐casein milk protein systems. Possible effects of polymorphisms on body measurements were investigated by analysis of variance. The numbers of animals included in the analyses ranged from 2600 in one analysis to about 100 heifers with precalving measurements and identified polymorphism types for the systems studied. Most of the analysis involved over 1000 animals. No meaningful evidence of relationship between polymorphism type and single measurement, type of measurement or measurements taken at the same age was observed. Enumeration of the probabilities that the F values could have resulted from chance alone indicated that, as a whole and generally for various groupings, fewer F values associated with low probabilities were observed tha
