SummaryA monoclonal antibody termed B2 Val 7C7, was produced by the fusion of xenoimmune mouse spleen cells with Sp2/0.Ag 14 myeloma cells. This antibody is specific for a polymorphic lymphocyte antigen; it was detected on cells from 138 out of 177 cattle by both125I‐labelled protein A (solid‐phase radioimmunoassay, SPRIA) and gold‐labelled protein A (immunogold). Its binding was tested on various cell types (peripheral blood lymphocytes, monocytes, polymorphonuclear cells (PMN), thymocytes) from a variety of normal bovine donors. On the one hand, B2 Val 7C7 detects a determinant present on all IgG‐bearing lymphocytes, on 20 % of the non‐IgG‐bearing lymphocytes and on the majority of the monocytes. On the other hand, no binding occurs on any PMN or thymocytes. The detected membrane antigen was isolated by immunoprecipitation from an NP 40 extract of3H‐leucine‐labelled cells. SummaryLymphocytes from 90 mature pigs and 548 growing pigs from 6.5 litters were screened withcytotoxicantibodies against swine lymphocyte antigens. Pigs included in the survey were from the Chester White, Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire breeds. Significant differences between breeds were found in the frequency of the three haplotypes tested. Such differences may provide the genetic variability needed to determine associations between disease susceptibility and the pig's major histocompatibility gene complex.

SummaryIn a genetic analysis of a polymorphic system, differences between the observed type of an individual and that expected from the parental types can arise either from an incorrect model or from pedigree errors. Such pedigree errors can cause severe difficulties in studies of the mode of inheritance of a novel polymorphic system. A method is proposed which overcomes the problem by including sire and dam error rates explicitly in the genetic model. The error rates are estimated by maximum likelihood, and likelihood ratio tests used to compare different models or estimates from different data sets. The proposals are applied to a study of the inheritance of the bovine serumAmIamylases.

SummaryResults of a joint study carried out in South Africa and England to search for new genetic markers in the blood of goats are presented. Haemoglobin (Hb) phenotypes were reinvestigated with the technique of isoelectric focusing; frequencies in different goat breeds are given. SummaryRed cell carbonic anhydrase (Ca) types were investigated in 750 animals from three zebu, two exotic and three crossbred breeds. A Ca isozyme of slower mobility than the S isozyme was observed in four Sahiwal animals. The gene frequency ofCaS, which was the predominant allele in all the breeds investigated ranged from 0.88 to 1.0.

SummaryGenetic polymorphism of the pig plasma vitamin D binding protein Gc was demonstrated by agarose isoelectrofocusing followed by either autoradiography or immunofixation with specific human Gc antiserum. Three different types F, FS and S were observed. Family data supported the genetic theory that the Gc types are controlled by two autosomal codominant allelesGcFandGcs. Both alleles are present in Yorkshire and Duroc. In Danish Landrace and Hampshire only theGcFallele was observed.

SummaryTwo cell membrane leucocyte alloantigens were detected in pigs by simple direct agglutination tests. Family studies showed that the locus controlling these antigens was not identical, or in close linkage, with the SLA major histocompatibility complex,SLBleucocyte locus or with theA, E, andNblood group loci. In the studied population, the locus termedSLC(Swine Leucocyte C locus) has two alleles controlling mutually exclusive antigens SLC‐1 and SLC‐2. The frequency ofSLC1andSLC2alleles is 0.10 and 0.90, respectively.
