SummaryPronase‐treated cattle red cells (CRC) from different monozygous (MZ) twin pairs could be classified as weakly (titre 1: 2, 1: 4) or strongly (titre 1: 1024, 1: 4096) agglutinable when Phytohemagglutinin‐M (Phy‐M) was used as agglutinin. In the presence of concavalin‐A (Con‐A), the CRC from different MZ pairs treated with pronase, A‐chymotrypsin or trypsin showed a gradation from low (titre 1: 32) to high (titre 1: 256 000) agglutinability. The trypsin‐treated CRC which had A1, A2blood factors usually had a titre of 1: 8000 or higher with Con‐A. Both the intact CRC and the CRC treated with proteolytic enzymes were capable of absorbing the Phy‐M

SummaryNeuraminidase treatment made cattle red cells (CRC) agglutinable by the agglutinins of the different heterologous but not of the homologous sera. These agglutinins were, however, absorbed by both the nauraminidase‐treated and the intact CRC.Proteolytic treatment made CRC agglutinable also by the normal cattle, isoimmune and autologous sera. Agglutination titres of the CRC ranged from 1: 2 to 1: 256, but the variation between CRC from members of monozygous (MZ) pairs was not greater than ± 2 agglutination score units the range of experimental error.Treatment with trypsin made the A1, A2factors more emergent on the surface of CRC for agglutination by anti‐A2, while pronase treatment had a similar effect upon agglutination of Z‐positive cells by

SummaryTotal lipids and protein‐containing residues obtained after lipid extraction from various organs and body fluids of J‐positive cattle were tested for J activity in the bovine J blood group system. Polar lipids prepared by column chromatography of total lipids, which contain predominantly neutral lipids, were also tested. Total lipids (or polar lipids, respectively) were analysed for lipid phosphorus, lipid sugar, and hexosamine. Both lipids and non‐lipid fractions of brain, myocardium, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue show no J activity. The lipids of urinary bladder epithelium, spleen, liver, and kidney are J‐positive, whereas their non‐lipid fractions are J‐negative. Both the lipids and the non‐lipid fractions of seminal plasma, spermatozoa, and faeces are J‐active. The lipids extracted from hair show no J activity, while those of cornea and eyelens are J‐active. SummaryGenetic polymorphism was found in the isozymes of leucine aminopeptidase in the canine plasma. Analysis of parentage records of the dogs examined revealed that the phenotypic variation of leucine aminopeptidase isozymes was controlled by one autosomal locus, designatedLap, with two codominant gene alleles,LapAandLapB, though individuals of homozygous B type were not found in the specimen used. The gene frequencies were 0.97 forLapAand 0.03 forLapBin most of the dog breeds examined. SummaryUsing bovine erythrocyte typing reagents in a leukocyte microcytotoxicity system, bovine peripheral blood leukocytes were found to have specific surface antigens. In this study, no obvious association between leukocyte.antigens and erythrocyte antigens of any individual animal was found. The leukocyte and erythrocyte antigens appeared to be distinct from each other.

SummaryBreed distribution of precipitin reactants (of types A and B) was encountered in: Brahma and Columbian Plymouth Rock ‐ high strength and frequencies; White Cornish, Dark Cornish, Minorca, Barred Plymouth Rock, New Hampshire, Rhode Island Red, Catalana and Cubalaya ‐ low to medium strength and frequencies; Australorp, White Leghorn, Polish, Sexline ‐ no reactions. Cocks exhibited only type A reactants. Both A and B substances were detected in egg yolks. Type A substances were encountered in sera of newly hatched chicks. Their decay was slow ‐ the mean persistence time being about 15 days. Only two young chicks among 160 tested exhibited the reactants of type B.
