SummaryThe porcine A blood group substance is found in the serum as a Lipid and, additionally, in certain animals, as a glycoprotein. Swine lymphocyte antigens (SLA) occur in the serum only as glycoproteins. Heat treatment of the solid residue obtained by lipid extraction yielded a water‐soluble fraction with low protein content, high A activity, but no SLA activity. Poly(glycosy1)ceramides with SLA activity do not occur in the serum; poly(glycosy1)ceramides with A activity cannot be excluded. Desialylation of protein fractions has no effect on A and SLA activity. SummaryFrequency of blood group factors at theA‐OandHloci were markedly altered within halothane positive (HP) and halothane negative (HN) composite synthetic Pietrain/Hampshire lines (PTH) over four generations of selection.Linkage studies on the litters from 45 double backcross and 20 mixed and intercross matings, involving theS(A‐O), H, PhiandHalloci, were made in the PTH line and halothane positive and negative selected British Landrace lines. Crossing‐over frequencies of 0.05 ± 0.04, 0.05 ± 0.03 and 0.1 ± 0.03 were established betweenPhiandHal, HandHal, andPhiandHrespectively. An unequal crossing‐over frequency betweenPhiandHwas found when the allelesHaandHcdwere compared. The difference in recombination frequency between theHaandHcdalleles amounted to 0.04 to 0.06.No cross‐overs were observed between theS(A ‐O) andPhi, HorHalloci in 15 families studied. The position of theSlocus in relation to the other loci could not be established, but statistical evidence of association favours a haplotype sequence

SummaryA ‘;null’ activity variant phenotype for sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) was observed in C57BL/LiA mice and used to examine the genetics of this enzyme. Linkage studies of the locus (Sdh‐1) with non‐agouti (a) and a biochemical Iocus encoding liver L‐α‐hydroxyacid oxidase (Hao‐1) demonstrated that it is coincident with or closely linked to the structural locus, previously localized on chromosome 2. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isozymes were also examined, since the liver A2isozyme exhibited some activity as a sorbitol dehydrogenase on cellulose acetate zymograms. SummaryGenetic differences affecting the degree of splenomegaly in the graft‐versus‐host reaction (GVHR) of chickens were studied. Two B genotypes, B9B9and B11B11, and two GVHR‐selected lines, H and L, were examined. The degree of splenomegaly of B9B9→ B11B11was significantly higher than that of B11B11→ B9B9for all line combinations. In contrast, the inoculation of H into L gave consistently higher splenomegaly than that of L into H. This suggested that the effects of B locus were higher in hosts than in donors, while those of the GVHR‐selected lines were higher in donors than in hosts.The analysis of variance revealed that both the differences between the reciprocal combination of B genotypes and between the GVHR line combinations were statistically highly significant. SummaryA bi directional selection experiment was conducted to measure 5‐day antibody titers to sheep erythrocytes in White Leghorn chickens. There was an immediate response to selection with significant differences between lines for the selected trait found in the S1and all subsequent generations.
