SummaryThe frequencies of three co‐dominant allelesTfA,TfBandTfccontrolling the serum transferrin locus in native and exotic breeds of pig in the United Kingdom are shown. Matings between different transferrin genotypes and segregation of the transferrin alleles in piglets from 131 litters are also recorded.In eleven litters from matings within a closely related group of animals heterozygous for theTfcallele, no offspring of theTfc/Tfcgenotype were born. Matings between heterozygous related boars believed to be carrying a lethal factor linked to theTflocus and heterozygous unrelated sows of the Saddleback breed, resulted in offspring of theTfc/Tfcgenotype being born.An excess of heterozygote genotypes was found in all litters from matings between animals heterozygous for theTfcallele. In all these litters the average litter size was 0.5 piglets less per litter than the average for all other litters studied. For the eleven litters from matings involving closely related animals heterozygous for theTfcallele, the average litter size was 1.4 piglets less per litter than the average for all other litters.The possibility of an early lethal factor being linked to the Tf locus in this family of pigs is discusse

SummaryBovine erythrocytes can be preserved for long periods of time by freezing and storing in liquid nitrogen. Blood group determinations, titrations, and isoimmunizations indicated that there were no detectable alterations in antigenic reactivities of preserved erythrocytes when compared with fresh samples of blood from the same animal. In addition, consistent percentages of recovery within a frozen mixture could be obtained, indicating that the deterioration of erythrocytes with time was not significant. Variations in the percentage of recovery of erythrocytes with different concentrations of sucrose (the cryoprotective agent) were significant at the 0.01 level of probability. The highest average percentages of recovery of erythrocytes from whole blood and the cellular fraction of blood (blood from which plasma was removed before freezing) were obtained with 45 and 40% sucrose, respectively. Results also indicated that whole blood gave a slightly higher percentage of recovery, than the cellular fraction. The individual donor effect, storage time in liquid nitrogen, and various saline concentrations of the thawing and washing solutions had no significant effects upon percentage of recovery.

SummaryEsterase activity was determined in 723 pig‐serum samples with a‐naphthyl acetate as substrate, and in 591 samples with β‐naphthyl acetate. The activities showed a wide range and were distributed in groups. β‐naphthyl acetate gave a specific reaction to arylesterase and spread the activities in at least 17 groups. Yorkshire pigs had in general a higher level of arylesterase activity than Swedish Landrace pigs. The results were in agreement with the theory of multiple alleles controlling the arylesterase activities (Augustinsson and Olsson, 1961). SummaryOn the basis of the frequency of blood group alleles in Danish Landrace pigs, the theoretical probability of excluding incorrectly alleged paternity and parentage by means of the various blood group systems are calculated. The probability of excluding incorrect paternity of 1 and 4 pigs, will be 85 and 97%, respectively.
