AbstractRaman and infrared spectra of phosphatidylcholine‐acid mixtures (1:1) are reported and discussed in terms of both general structural and specific interactions as a function of the acidic strength of the proton donor. The infrared spectra indicate the formation of a strong, highly polarizable hydrogen bond with monochloro‐, dichloro‐ and trichloroacetic acids. The complete transfer of the proton from the donor to the phospholipid is observed with hydrochloric acid. The Raman data suggest conformational changes in the lateral packing of the acylic chains of the phospholipid. The importance of both these specific interactions, namely hydrogen bonding and structural modifications, in biological systems is discussed and related to biological act

AbstractRaman spectra of red and yellow forms of HgI2have been recorded as a function of temperature and pressure. Temperatures between 77 and 570 K and pressures up to 14 khar have been used to investigate the vibrational modes of four (and possibly five) phases of this material. No evidence could be found from the Raman spectrum to support the suggestion that a thermal anomaly within the stability range of the red form indicates a III to IV transition. Clear differentiation between the yellow high temperature and high pressure phases has been shown, and the phase boundary (YHP→YHT) located. AbstractThe medium resolution Raman spectrum of gaseous phenol has been recorded between 4000 and 50 cm−1using the 5145 Å line of an argon laser. A number ofa′ bands have been observed which correspond to previously assigned normal modes, but lines at 1388 and 1285 cm−1, which are not normally observed in the infrared spectrum of the gas, have been assigned as fundamentals. In addition, a strong Raman band at 1007 cm−1is probably an overtone of an out‐of‐plane vibration at 503 cm−1in resonance with a nearbya′ fundamental. Two bands at 824 and 810 cm−1were both found to belong to the symmetrica′ species. Previous assignments have dealt with these two bands as having different symmetries. A reassignment of some of the fundamentals of phenol may be necessary to account for thes

These data were interpreted in a systematic manner based on the known structures of these compounds. Assignments and correlations have been made for many of the observed bands.
