AbstractRaman and IR spectra of solid powders and solutions of paraquat and derivatives are reported. The fundamental vibrations of each compound have been assigned on the basis of group frequency correlations, isotopic substitution (shifts) and band intensities, as well as depolarization values when applicable.

AbstractIt is shown that by measuring the appropriate diagonal and off‐diagonal tensor con ponents of the Raman spectrum of a cubic crystal and then carrying out a simple subtraction process in a computer it is possible to isolate the totally symmetric Raman spectrum from the other components. The method relies on obtaining the data in digital form using automated spectrometry. The technique is applied to cubic Cr3B7O13Cl, whose Raman spectrum is reported here for the first time. TheA1spectrum at 300K comprises four bands at 176, 209, 375 and 657 cm−1in agreement with group theoretical predictions. In addition, the spectrum contains a prominent wing feature extending to 250 cm−1that is most likely associated with the ferroelectric phase transition at

AbstractA system for the calibration of the absolute spectral response of spectrometers is described using a standard reflector ‐ of the type used especially for colour measurements – as a secondary light source. In contrast to conventional light sources for calibrations, the radiance is approximately constant over the whole area of the source, and the angular characteristic is known for a large range of reflection angles φ. A special advantage is that the angular characteristic follows closely the Lambert‐cosine‐jaw in the region φ∼45°. AbstractThe Raman specrum of β‐adenosine‐5′‐phosphoric acid has been observed in its aqueous solution with 6471, 5145, 4880, 4579, 4579, and 3511 Å excitation. An examination of the manner of increase of the intensities of the Raman lines at 1580 and 1484 cm−1of the adenine residue indicated that the electronic excited state corresponding to a weak absorption band at 276 nm is responsible for these Raman scatterings. This idea has been supported by a similar examination of the Raman spectrum of β‐adenosine‐3′,5′‐cyclic phosphoric acid and an examination of the effect of temperature on the Raman spectra of poly rA and poly(rA‐rU). A discussion is included of the geometrical structure of the adenine residue in its lowest‐singlet electronic excited state, based on the vibrational structure of the fluorescence spectrum, the result of a normal coordinate treatment, and the result of a semiempirical Pariser‐Parr‐Pople calculat

AbstractThe Raman spectrum of gaseous N2F4at a pressure of 760 torr was recorded with a spectral slit width of 3 cm−1. Ten of the expected eleven fundamentals of the symmetric motions of both thegaucheandtransisomers give rise to strongly polarized Raman lines. These new data require a reassignment of some of the fundamentals for both the C2andC2hconformers. The Raman of the solid at 18K was also recorded. Both conformers were found in the solid even after annealing the sample for 9 hours at a temperature of 101.6K and 3 hours at a temperature of 106.8K.
