AbstractRaman, infrared and far infrared spectra of polycrystalline samples of H2S and D2S at 80 K and 18 K have been recorded. Many new features have been detected, including some very low frequency Raman modes. The assignments of these and other peaks are discussed in terms of the known crystal structure and compared with previous results. The spectra are in general compatible with the low symmetry and unusually large unit cell of this molecular crystal. The principal features are described qualitatively in terms of interactions involving the four hydrogen bonds linking each molecule in the two dimeasional network.

AbstractRaman scattering from single crystals of potassium acid phthalate has been observed with the 4880 Å and 5145 Å excitations of an argon ion laser. The room temperature Raman spectra, recorded with a Jarrel‐Ash spectrometer, in the region 0–300 cm−1, exhibit broad bands which are attributed to the translatory and rotatory types of lattice vibrations of the potassium and acid phthalate ions in the crystal. Experiments were carried out at 77 K using a Spex double monochromator and the Raman scattering in the second‐order of the gratings were observed. The result was a splitting of the several broad bands into their components. Assignments of these low frequency Raman spectra, consistent with the crystal structure and the group theoretical predictions is given. Variations in intensities of some of the spectra due to crystal orientation are also observed and briefly

AbstractInfrared and Raman spectra of [Ni(NH3)6]X2compounds were measured at temperatures from 80 K to 300 K in the frequency range belowc.400 cm−1. Besides the simple bands previously reported additional ones were seen, especially at lower temperatures. The broad band which appeared between the lattice vibration and the δ(NNiN) deformation vibration was interpreted as partly representing the phonon density distribution from the whole Brillouin zone. Its appearance is induced by crystal imperfections connected with NH3vacancies. Additíonal bands between δ(NNiN) deformation vibration and ν(NiN) stretching, and those above the ν(NiN) stretching were interpreted as combination bands in which the lattice vibration combines with the deformation in the former case and with the stretching mode in the latter. A satellite band close to the ν(NiN) stretching was interpreted as a combination of the stretching and libration mode of the whole [Ni(NH3)6]2+ion. A model correlation function describing the librations was fitted to the experimental correlation function obtained from the i.r.

AbstractRaman spectral data for the species HgX2, HgX3−and HgX42−(X = Cl and Br) in solution in 24 class A donor solvents are presented. The complex ions were present in the solutions as lithium salts. The frequencies (ν1) of the symmetric stretching vibrations of HgX2and Hg3−correlate well with solvent donicity (DN) and with other measures of solvent donor strength. A two‐parameter regression equation of the form ν1=ao+a1(DN) +a2(Eτ), whereEτis the Dimroth‐Reichardt electrophilicity parameter, gives good correlations for the HgX42−ions. Evidence based on (i) the frequency values of the symmetric and antisymmetric (ν3) stretching vibrations of HgCl2and HgBr2, (ii) the Raman intensities of the ν3mode of HgBr2and (iii) the depolarization ratios of the ν1bands of HgClsand HgBr2in various solvents, supports the view that these molecules in solution undergo a progressive departure from linearity as a result of increasing solvent coordination to the mercury atom. AbstractThe Raman spectra of gaseous and solid bis(trifluoromethyl)peroxide, (CF3)2O2, have been recorded from 20 to 1300 cm−1. The infrared spectrum of the solid has been investigated from 35 to 1300 cm−1. The far infrared spectrum of the gaseous phase was recorded from 20 to 250 cm−1. A reassignment of the low frequency fundamentals has been made. Both CF3torsional modes have been observed in the solid and at least one in the gaseous phase. AbstractA multichannel spectrometer with photoelectric image devices, interfaced with a data acquisition and handling system, permits temporal analysis of Raman spectra. This system enables rapid kinetic studies to be made. The fast oxidation of sulphite ion by bromate ion in an acid medium (0.46 N) is given as an example. The rate of disappearance of the bromate ion has been determined and shows an important hydrogen ion dependence.
