AbstractA quantitative analysis is made of the problem of obtaining accurate polarization measurements in Raman microspectroscopy. The introduction of experimentally determined correction factors arising from the optical properties of the beam splitter allows the depolarization by the microscope objective to be studied separately. Correction curves are calculated for the various parameters which characterize the light‐excitation path and the light‐collection path. These parameters are functions of both the numerical aperture of the objective and the refractive index of the (isotropic) sample. The introduction of these parameters into the expressions for the depolarization ratios of various Raman and resonance Raman bands accounts well for the differences noted between the results of the present microprobe measurements and those obtained with conventional instruments. AbstractA Raman microprobe technique was applied to analyse the chemical components at the interface layer between dental adhesive resins and dentine. Raman spectra from each spot (ca.2 μm in diameter) on the flat surface perpendicular to the interface were measured individually. AbstractRaman and infrared spectra of crystalline tin tetrabromide at temperatures between 20 K and the melting point, 304 K, are reported. No evidence of any solid‐state phase transition was found. Splittings of the four molecular modes are discussed in terms of crystal field effects and isotopic species. All twelve Raman and five of the nine infrared‐active lattice modes, predicted on the basis of a group theoretical analysis, have been observed. AbstractInfrared and resonance Raman spectra of 1‐hydroxy‐9, 10‐anthraquinone, its deuteriated and deprotonated forms and its metal chelates with CuII, NiIIand CoIIions are presented. Vibrational assignments of the carbonyl, hydroxyl and the chelating unit of this chromophore are emphasized. It is found that the different metal ions force delocalization of the electrons on the chelate rings to different extents. AbstractThe UV Raman excitation profiles ofl‐cystine have been measured between 220 and 514.5 nm. No enhancement is observed from the lowest energy electronic transition (λmax= 245 nm). The excitation profiles for the SS, CS and CO stretching vibrations are each satisfactorily modeled by standard AlbrechtA‐term pre‐resonance expressions which indicate that the Raman intensities derive from a state(s) atca170 nm which is probably σ → σ*in character.
