AbstractReactions of N‐carboxy‐α‐amino acid anhydride (NCA) with dialkylzinc or related organozinc compounds were studied to elucidate the polymerization mechanism of NCA by dialkylzinc as initiator.The first stage of initiation reaction is a hydrogen abstraction reaction of dialkylzinc from NH group of α‐amino acid NCA resulting in the formation of an activated NCA. The second stage of initiation is a reaction between two molecules of the activated NCA forming a zinc carbamate group.Propagation reaction is a carbonyl addition of the zinc carbamate group to the activated NCA to form a mixed anhydride which changes into an amide group releasing carbon dioxide.Regeneration of the activated NCA is supposed to be done by the reaction of free α‐amino acid NCA with the zinc atom bonded to nitrogen atom at the growi

AbstractCellulose samples having a degree of polymerization (P) of 400, 200, 100, and 50 were crystallized isothermally from dilute solutions of aqueous sodium hydroxide and from cellulose xanthate solutions. Observation of the suspension under an optical microscope revealed that in most cases various shapes of huge lamellae in the order of 10 to 50μ were formed. These lamellae could easily be disintegrated by ultrasonic cavitation and under an electron microscope they were seen as fibrous sheets. In all the cases studied, the lengths of the fibrils were equivalent to or longer than the fully extended molecular length. The huge lamellae viewed under an optical microscope are considered to be loosely packed aggregates of the fibrils. In view of the low crystallinity found in these fibrils, the fringed micelle model seems rather preferable to the extended chain crystals. Viscometric measurements showed that the induction period, where reduced viscosity decreased or did not change, was followed by the pre‐crystallization stage which was manifested by a sudden increase, and then crystallization started as revealed by a rapid decrease in the reduced viscosity. This implies that cellulose chains were stiffened by the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds before the intermolecular crystallization started. If the formation of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds prior to a regular ordering of the chains in a lattice was avoided, therefore, it is anticipated that cellulose crystallizes in the form of chain folded lamellae. This was actually achieved by using an aqueous solution of equal moles of sodium hydroxide and methanol as the solvent. In this case, the reduced viscosity did not increase appreciably and dropped as the crystallization started. Namely, stiffening of the cellulose chains did not occur in the pre‐crystallization stage. The electron microscopy revealed that the crystals formed were lamellar in this case. The size of the lamellae was in the range of 0.5 to 5μ, and their thickness was in the order of 80 to 120 Å. AbstractThe mechanism of the alternate copolymerization of phenyl isocyanate with ethylene oxide was investigated. Several experimental results show that this copolymerization proceeds according to an anionic coordinated mechanism.As for alternate copolymerization three mechanisms are generally considerable as follows; (1) a simple copolymerization, (2) a polymerization through an equimolar cyclic intermediate, (3) a successive alternate coordination.The present paper describes the studies concerned with each case. The experimental result in the elementary model reactions seems to be compatible with the mechanism of the successive alternate coordination. In addition, it was also found that only the monomeric form of the catalyst is effective to the alternate copolymerization.

AbstractAn Hand von röntgenographischen Weitwinkelmessungen an Niederdruckpolyäthylen wurde das thermische Ausdehnungsverhalten des kristallinen und amorphen Anteils beim Aufheizen der Probe in einem Temperaturbereich von −10°C bis zum Schmelzpunkt verfolgt. Dabei konnte man bei etwa 50°C eine „sprungartige”︁ Änderung der beiden lateralen Gitterparameter a und b sowie der Winkellage des Intensitätsmaximums des amorphen Buckels feststellen. In Anlehnung an die erhaltenen Untersuchungsergebnisse wurde ein molekularer Mechanismus der beobachteten Strukturänderungen vorgeschlagen. Als Ursache wurde das Einsetzen von Drehschwingungen der kristallinen Kettenteile um die Moleküllängsachse bei dieser Temperatur angenommen. Unterhalb dieser Umwandlungstemperatur sollen für das thermische Ausdehnungsverhalten der Probe nur die transversalen Wärmeschwingungen verantwortlich sein. Die beobachtete Analogie in dem Wärmeausdehnungsverhalten der kristallinen und der amorphen Bereiche würde ferner darauf hinweisen. daß das Einsetzen der zur Kristallgitterauflockerung führenden Drehschwingungen die Molekülbewegungsmechanismen auch in den amorphen Zwischenbereichen auslöst. Dieser Befund bestätigt auch die von anderen Autoren auf Grund thermischer und dynamomechanischer Messungen beobachtete Umwandlung des Polyäthylens in

AbstractDas Entmischungsverhalten von definierten Polymermischungen wurde im System Polystyrol/Benzol/Methanol bei 25°C durch die Analyse der Gelphasen, die sich bei bestimmten Überschreitungen (30, 60 und 90%) des Gleichgewichts bilden, untersucht. Dabei ergab sich, daß in erster Linie die hochmolekulare Komponente aus der Lösung „herausgedrückt”︁ wird, aber auch die niedermolekulare Komponente eine Löslichkeitsverminderung erfährt. Diese Löslichkeitsbeeinflussung nimmt mit zunehmendem Konzentrationsverhältnis cB/cAund mit abnehmendem Molekulargewichtsverhältnis MA/MBzu, in guter Übereinstimmung mit Fällungstitrations‐Experimenten. Ein Einfluß von Menge und Zusammensetzung der Gelphase auf die Zusammensetzung der Solphase kann nicht festgestellt werden.Die statistisch‐thermodynamischen Theorien werden in ihrer gegenwärtigen Form diesem Entmischungsverhalten derverdünntenpolydispersen Lösung offenbar nicht gerecht. Gegenwärtig sollte daher der Beschreibung mittels empirisch bestimmbarer Aktivitätskoeffizienten der Vorzug gegeben werden. AbstractSome kinetic relationships between the monomer concentration and the composition of the polymers from 1.4‐dienes, in terms of monomeric and structural units, are derived taking into account all the cyclization reactions which can occur in the course of the chain growth. AbstractEs wird die Polykondensation („Polycrotonisation”︁) zwischen aromatischen Dialdehyden und aromatischen Diacetylverbindungen, CH3COArXArCOCH3, die zu Polychalkonen führt, beschrieben. AbstractThe NMR spectroscopy of cresols, benzylphenols, and di‐, tri‐, and tetra‐nuclear phenolformaldehyde condensates using pyridine as solvent proved that their methyl or methylene groups which haveortho‐phenolic hydroxyl groups show their signals at much lower τ‐values as compared with those compounds having noortho‐phenolic hydroxyl groups.
