AbstractThe polymerization of vinyl chloride in tetrahydrofuran, 1.2‐dichloroethane and chlorobenzene with lauroyl peroxide as initiator has been studied. In these solvents the polymerizing systems separate in two phases at a certain degree of conversion which is a fanction of the initial monomer concentration. In relation with the phase separation a decrease of the polymerization rates occurs.For the homogeneous polymerization the reaction order with respect to monomer is 1 in tetrahydrofuran and 1.2‐dichloroethane. In the polymerization in chlorobenzene the solvent acts as a retarder and consequently it is impossible to determine the reaction order with respect to monomer.The reaction order with respect to initiator is found to be 0.35 in all the examined solvents. In the solvents which are not high chain transfer agents, the molecular weights of the polymers vary with the monomer concentration in the same manner as the polmerization rate.The tetrahydrofuran is found to be a very active chain transfer agent.An interpretation of the experimental data is gi

AbstractUm Polyradikale mit Verdazylgruppen zu gewinnen, wurden verschiedene Wege erprobt. Die Methylierung von Polyacrolein‐formazan führte nicht zum Ziel. Herstellung und Eigenschaften von 1.5‐Diphenyl‐3‐(p‐vinylphenyl)‐verdazyl werden beschrieben; eine radikalische Polymerisation dieser Verbindung war nicht möglich. AbstractDie radikalische Polymerisation von Acrylnitril (AN), Methacrylnitril, α‐Chloracrylnitril, Crotonsäurenitril und Methylmethacrylat wird unter Bestrahlung bei 60°C in An wesenheit von AgNo3untersucht, und die Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeiten werden verglichen. Unterschiede in der Polymerisationsfähigkeit einzelner Monomerer lassen sich teilweise auf Komplexbildung mit AgNO3zuräckfähren. Es werden einige andere anorganische Nitrate als Initiatoren eingesetzt; ihre Aktivität entspricht der Stellung der Kationen in der Spannungsreihe. AbstractEs wurde versucht, Gemische oligomerer Modellsubstanzen aus Diphenylcarbonat und 4.4′‐Dihydroxy‐diphenyl‐2.2′‐propan (Bisphenol A) mit Hilfe der Gelpermeationschromatographie an Sephadexgelen (LH‐20) zu trennen. Die Messung der Verteilungskoeffizienten (Kd‐Werte) ergab, daß diese bei Substanzen mit phenolischen Endgruppen über den nach dem Molekulargewicht zu erwartenden Werten liegen, woür Adsorptionseffekte am Säulenmaterial verantwortlich gemacht werden. AbstractBei der Aufarbeitung von Rückständen aus der Polymerisation von Trioxan konnten neben Trioxan und Tetroxan auch höhere cyclische Oligomere des Formaldehyds isoliert werden. Das Pentamere wurde dabei mit Hilfe der präparativen Gaschromatographie gewonnen, während zur Isolierung eines Ringes mit 15 Formaldehydeinheiten die Methode des Zonenschmelzens geeignet war. Die durch saure Agentien katalysierte Pyrolyse von Polytrioxan führt ebenfalls zu höheren cyclischen Oligomeren des Formaldehyds. Durch pyrolse‐gaschromatographische Untersuchungen wurde die Bildung von Pentoxan sichergestellt und das Entstehen von Hexoxan wahrscheinlich gemacht. AbstractThe DMSO molecule behaves as a zwitterion having an electrostatic charge density on its oxygen atom comparable to that of the fluoride ion. Therefore the DMSO anion interacts with water to form an A‐region having two water molecules,i.e., a DMSO 2H2O complex at 66% DMSO. Studies on amylose and amylopectin show that DMSO 2H2O as well as anhydrous DMSO help to stabilize the helix structure of amylose and amylopectin. Because this helix structure is absent in dextran and hydroxyethyl cellulose, their properties in DMSO/water solutions are different from those of starch. The proposed model for the interaction of DMSO or hydrated DMSO with the starch helix shows how these molecules stabilize the helix by interacting with only one hydroxyl group of the C‐2 and C′‐3 hydrogen bonded hydroxyl groups. The α‐helix of amylose and amylopectin is more stable at acid pH values of 90 and 100% DMSO solutions than alkaline values because of the formation of the (CH3)2S+‐OH cation. The hydroxyl group of this cation salts‐out the hydrogen bonds just as the case of the hydrated A‐regions of Li+and Na+cations. Optical rotation studies show that the addition of hydrated Na+ions also stabilizes the α‐helix just as a decrease in apparent pH. The greater stability of the helix in these DMSO solutions predicts that its average segment length will also increase. The decrease in the corrected specific rotation of amylose in going from water to DMSO solutions is most likely due to an increase in the thermal motion of the amylose rather than any decrease in the helix stability. The DMSO disperses starch because, unlike the hydrogen bonds in the helix, both of the hydroxyl groups involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonds can become complexed to DMSO anions. The lower pK of such Intermolecular hydrogen bonds also allows alkali in DMSO to increase the dispersion power of DMSO. Salt (NaCI) decreases the dispersion power of DMSO because of the formation of interchain linkages through the unhydrated Cl−ion. The (CH3)2S+‐OH cation increases the dispersion power of DMSO by favoring the formation of those hydrogen bond

AbstractMeasurement of the sedimentation coefficient of 12 amylose acetate fractions\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \left( {1.5 \cdot < {\rm \bar M}_{\rm w} < 3.2 \cdot 10^6 } \right) $$\end{document}in nitromethane solution showed that the relation\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm S}_{\rm 0} = 2.25 \cdot 10^{ - 15} {\rm \bar M}_{\rm w}^{{\rm 0}{\rm .42}} $$\end{document}holds. Unperturbed dimensions were obtained using the COWIE‐BYWATER treatment of the sedimentation data. The FLORY‐MANDELKERN Constant, β, was independent of molecular weight, indicating that there was negligible draining of the amylose acetate moleclue in the molecular weight examined. It is concluded that the amylose acetate is extended in solution as a result of solute‐solvent interaction rather than to a high degree of steric hindrance; the polymer behaves as a random coil in agreement with the FLORY
