摘要:
AbstractA new twisted smectic mesophase formed in Tween 80 (1) (monooleate of the ether of sorbitan with 4 mol of polyethyleneglycol)‐water system was found. The induced circular dichroism (CD) spectra of achiral molecules dissolved in this twisted smectic mesophase are compared with those in the thermotropic cholesteric mesophase. Pyrene and fluorene and their derivatives, acridine, phenazine, and phenothiazine were used as achiral molecules (solute molecules). It was found that the signs and shape of the induced CD bands observed in the twisted smectic mesophase were dependent on the solute concentration. The magnitude of the induced CD bands was dependent on the symmetry of the solute molecules and the value of the geometrical ratio of short‐axis to long‐axis of the solute molecules. AbstractThe mesophase induced circular dichroism (CD) of biphenyl and its derivatives was investigated using the Tween 80 (monooleate of the ether of sorbitan with 4 mol of polyethyleneglycol)‐water system, which can form a twisted smectic mesophase. The sign of CD bands in this mesophase is explained by a modified C2‐symmetry rule, since it can be considered that alignment of the solute molecules in this mesophase can be elucidated in terms of a pseudo‐C2symmetry, when the concentration of the solute is comparatively high. The assignments of the electronic transitions of the solute molecules show a good accordance with results of magnetic circular dichroism

AbstractThe interaction of polypeptides with dyes in a lyotropic mesophase, consisting of Tween 80 (monooleate of the ether of sorbitan with 4 mol of polyethyleneglycol) and water, was studied, and the arrangement of dyes in the mesophase was discussed on the basis of the spectral change of circular dichroism under an electric field. The following results were observed. (1) The addition of a polypeptide to the mesophase considerably influenced the helical pitch of the mesophase. (2) In the mesophase the complexes of polypeptides with dyes were formed more easily than in aqueous solution. (3) When this mesophase was used as an orientation solvent under the electric field, the observed variation of circular dichroism bands could be used for an assignment of each band polarization. Thus, in the acidic region, acridine orange molecules are bound in such a manner that their long‐axes of molecular plane form a right‐handed super‐helix around the core of the α‐helix of poly(α,L‐glutamic acid). In the alkaline region, the poly(α,L‐glutamic acid)‐acridine orange complex cannot take a helical form, even when the mole ratio of polypeptide residues to dye

AbstractThe molecular parameters of macromolecular networks made by stepwise polymerization of polyfunctional monomers bearing identical reactive groups are established from the calculation of the probability that a functional group leads to a finite chain. AbstractThe viscoelastic behaviour of polyether‐based polyurethane networks containing sodium tetraphenylborate was investigated by means of dynamic mechanical measurements. AbstractBlock oligomers of general formula CH3(CH2)nO[CH2CH2O]9(CH2)nCH3wheren= 0 to 25 have been prepared. All blocks are monodisperse. Examination of their crystallinity (by differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray scattering, infra‐red and Raman spectroscopy) shows that, within defined limits (n>9, crystallisation temperature high), the block oligomers can crystallise completely.
