AbstractUsing published specific heat data, the entropy, enthalpy, and GIBBSfree energy of natural rubber (NR) have been calculated over the temperature range 0 to 320 °K. The thermodynamic function Cp/Tvs.T calculated for NR exhibits a maximum at 50 °K. and another maximum at 210 °K., which is associated with the glass transition. The number of classically vibrating units per repeating unit of NR is 6.61 at 300 °K.These functions have also been calculated for isoprene itself over the temperature range 0 to 300 °K. At 298.16 °K. the entropy of polymerization was found to be 24.00 cal./mole · deg. and the free energy of polymerization −10.7 kc

AbstractBeim Zerfall ungesättigter N‐Nitroso‐acylamine entstehen ungesättigte freie Radikale. Hierauf beruhen neue Verzweigungs‐ und Vernetzungsreaktionen für Polymere mittels multiheterofunktioneller Initiatoren und Sensibilisatoren. Als solche werden ein‐ oder auch mehrfach ungesättigte N‐Nitroso‐acylamine wie z. B. N‐Nitroso‐N‐(2‐äthyl)‐hexylmaleinamidsäure N‐Nitroso‐methylen‐dimethacrylamid, 1‐Nitroso‐5‐vinyl‐5‐isopropenylbarbitursäure u. a. eingesetzt.Bei thermisch oder photochemisch angeregtem Zerfall solcher Verbindungen werden olefinische Monomer wie Acrylsäure und deren Ester, Acrylnitril, Vinylacetat, Styrol usw. durch die gebildeten ungesättigten Radikale zu verzweigten bzw. vernetzten hochmolekularen Verbindungen polymerisiert. Hierbei sind prinzipiell zwei Reaktionswege möglich: 1. Ein ungesättigtes freies Radikal startet eine endständig ungesättigte Polymerkette. Diese kann über ihre freie Doppelbindung in eine zweite wachsende Kette unter Ausbildung einer Verzweigungs‐ oder Netzstelle eingebaut werden. —2. Ein Initiatormolekül wird über seine Doppelbindung in eine wachsende Kette eingebaut. Beim Zerfall des so gebildeten makromolekularen Nitrosamids wird an der entstehenden Polymerradikalstelle

AbstractStarting from the established relation: log η = A + 3.4 log M̄v, the kinetics of thermal degradation of isotactic polystyrene has been investigated in terms of melt viscosities measured as a function of melting time at constant temperatures between 265 and 320°C. Random chain scission predominates over radical chain depolymerization and can be described by a zero‐order reaction with an activation energy E of about 39 kcal./mole. At the same time, the kinetic plots permit evaluation of the temperature dependence of melt viscosity without interference by degradation. This leads to an activation energy for viscous flow E′ of 20 ± 2 kcal./mole. As the same value holds for atactic polystyrene; viscous flow seems not to be influenced by the stereoregularity of polystyrene. In addition to the above activation energies only a single run of melt viscometry with 1–2 g. of a new sample of isotactic polystyrene is needed for a quantitative prediction of its melt viscosity at any practical melting time and te

AbstractIn der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Kettenstruktur von Vinylidenchlorid (VDC)‐Vinylchlorid (VC)‐Copolymeren aus deren Ultrarot‐Spektren bestimmt. Die Monomereinheiten können in den drei Anordnungen: VDC‐VDC, VDC‐VC und VC‐VC vorkommen, wobei als Verknüpfungsstelle zweier Monomereinheiten jeweils eine Methylengruppe anzusehen ist. Die UR‐Banden der Scherenschwingung dieser drei unterschiedlichen Arten von Methylengruppen erscheinen bei verschiedenen Wellenzahlen. Aus der quantitativen Analyse dieses Bandensystems wird die Häufigkeit der drei möglichen Schritte bestimmt. Sie wird mit der aus der bekannten Copolymerisationsgleichung berechneten Verteilung verglichen. Mit den Parametern r1= 3,2 und r2= 0,2 ergibt sich gute Übereinstimmung zwischen Rechnung und experimentellen Werten. AbstractThe properties of polyvinylamine chelates were studied in aqueous solution by spectrophotometric, viscometric, and conductometric measurements. The results obtained by potentiometric measurements in a previous investigation were confirmed and extended. AbstractA series of aromatic polyurethanes based on ethylene glycol and two of their aliphatic analogs were synthesized and some of their physical properties determined. Polymer chain conformations are proposed which are consistent with X‐ray diffraction data. The polyurethane from diaminodiphenylmethane and ethylene glycol has a twisted chain conformation. This is in contrast to other polyurethanes examined which closely resemble their polyamide counterparts. The melting temperatures and glass transition temperatures of the polyurethanes are shown to be affected by chain stiffening resulting from the presence of the aromatic rings, as well as by the conformation of the polymer chain

AbstractTetrahydrofuran has been polymerised at 0°C. with triphenylmethyl hexachloroantimonate‐(V) and the polymer resolved into 10 fractions by fractional precipitation. Within the range M̄n= 32,300 to 118,000 the relationship [η] = 2.51.10‐4(M̄n)0.78obtains in toluene at 28°C. Confirmation is afforded of a previously reported variation of the HUGGINSviscosity slope constant with intrinsic viscosity.
