AbstractThe fully acetylated di‐peroxy ester of mucic acid was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene, and 84% of the theoretical amount of CO2was collected. Treatment with base did not affect the intrinsic viscosity of the resulting polymer. When this saponified polymer was subsequently oxidized by lead tetraacetate, its intrinsic viscosity showed a decrease. It is concluded that the peroxy ester showed a concerted split of the OO and CC bonds during the initiation and that the alkoxy counter‐radical is quite inactive towards polymer

AbstractPolymers prepared in heterogeneous medium can be used for the synthesis of block polymers, if they contain trapped radicals. With polyacrylonitrile the molar content of second monomer (vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, styrene, acrylamide) is low and inferior to 5%, except with methyl methacrylate (9%), acrylic acid (16%), methyl acrylate (14,3%) and acrylonitrile itself (∼36%). In this last case, the addition of monomer causes an appreciable increase of the highest molecular fraction.With polyacrylamide the incorporation of second monomer is low and exceeds not 8 mole % with acrylonitrile and acrylic acid. AbstractA tentative method for the determination of the rate constant of the propagation reaction (kp) in the stationary state of cationic polymerization was proposed, and as an example of its application, kpvalues ofp‐methoxystyrene initiated by iodine were obtained in ethylene chloride and in carbon tetrachloride. AbstractRate constants of the propagation reaction (kp) of isobutyl vinyl ether and 2‐chloroethyl vinyl ether initiated by iodine were obtained in ethylene chloride and inn‐hexane by the method proposed in the proceeding paper. AbstractAmylose und Cellulose wurden mit Essigesterisocyanat zu Tri‐carbäthoxymethylcarbamaten, die gute Löslichkeitseigenschaften besitzen, umgesetzt. Bei Amylose‐tricarbäthoxymethylcarbamaten lautet die Viskositäts‐Molekulargewichts‐Beziehung in Acetonlösung:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ [{\rm \eta ] = \hbox{1,02}} \cdot {\rm P}^{{\rm 0,63}}.$\end{document}Die Substanzen lassen sich gut quantitativ fraktionieren.Durch partielle Verseifung wurden die Amylosecarbamate in wasserlösliche Salze und durch Einwirkung von Ammoniak bzw. Hydrazin in Säureamide und Säurehydrazide übergeführt.Durch Umsetzung von partiell acetylierten Amylosen mit Essigesterisocyanat und anschließende Verseifung der Acetylgruppen erhält man ein wasserlösliches Negativ der ursprünglichen Substituentenverteilung, die sich nun durch Perjodatoxydation bestimmen läßt.Hydrophobe Derivate der Amylose und Cellulose, z. AbstractDer Einfluß verschiedenartiger niedrigmolekularer Quellungsmittel auf die mechanischen Eigenschaften von Polyurethan wurde in einem Temperaturbereich von −180°C bis etwa 50°C oberhalb der Glastemperatur mit Hilfe von freien Torsionsschwingungen bei konstanter Frequenz von 1 Hz untersucht.Während man bei ungequollenem Material nur zwei Relaxationsgebiete beobachtet (α‐Maximum bei etwa +40°C und α‐Maximum bei etwa −135°C), erscheint bei Quellungsmittelzusatz ein drittes Relaxationsgebiet bei etwa −70°C (β‐Maximum).Die Temperaturlage des α‐Maximums verschiebt sich mit steigender Konzentration an Quellungsmittel zu tieferen Temperaturen. (Das ist gleichbedeutend mit einer Erniedrigung der Glastemperatur.) Diese Erniedrigung ist bei allen untersuchten Systemen – mit Ausnahme des Systems Polyurethan/Wasser – dieselbe, wenn man die Konzentration des Quellungsmittels im Grundmolenbruch angibt. AbstractAus 21 heterocyclischen Dicarbonsäuren wurden lineare Polyamide hergestellt. Kondensationen durch Schmelzen von Hexamethylendiammoniumsalzen waren ungünstig, da die Produkte decarboxylierten, während Kondensationen über Ester etwas bessere Resultate gaben. Einige Salze ließen sich überhaupt nicht kondensieren.Mit 7 heterocyclischen Dicarbonsäurechloriden und verschiedenen Diaminen wurden Grenzflächenpolykondensationen durchgeführt, doch waren auch diese Polyamide in geschmolzenem Zustand nicht beständig.Molekulargewichtsbestimmungen zeigten, daß der Polykondensationsgrad nie über 30 lag.Vergleichsweise wurden Grenzflächenkondensate aus aromatischen Dicarbonsäuren oder Diaminen hergestellt. Es traten bei den heterocyclischen Derivaten keine grundsätzlich neuen Eigenschaften auf. Schmelzpunkte oder Löslichkeiten sind wegen des niederen Kondensationsgrades nicht eindeutig auf den Einfluß des Heterorings zurückzuführen.Es wird die Darstellung von zwei neuen Thiophendicarbonsäuren (Thiophen‐2,5‐diessigsäure und ‐2,5

AbstractKinetics of the polymerization ofn‐butyl methacrylate and isobutyl methacrylate have been reported in this paper. The average degree of polymerization (DP) has been found to remain reasonably constant upto about 30 per cent conversion beyond which it is found to increase with conversion.The methacrylic esters are characterized by low chain transfer to monomer. Kifor both the esters have been determined. From a double logarithmic plot of [η] against M the values of K and α of the STAUDINGER‐KUHNequation have been obtained for the poly‐n‐butyl methacrylate. Using the values of K and α thus obtained molecular weights of fractionated samples of polyisobutyl methacrylate have been calculated.
