AbstractZur Erklärung der molekularen Uneinheitlichkeit sogenannter lebender Polymerer sind in letzter Zeit besonders zwei Vorstellungen entwickelt worden: (1) Die Startreaktion ist sehr langsam gegenüber dem Wachstumsprozeß, (2) der Mischungsvorgang ist langsam gegenüber dem Wachstum. Für den Fall (2) wurde die Molekulargewichtsverteilung nach der Methode des “expandierenden Tropfens” berechnet und in Übereinstimmung mit den Versuchen gefunden. AbstractCopolymers of propylene and isoprene were prepared at low temperature using AlCl3dissolved in ethyl chloride as the polymerization initiator. The resulting copolymers were found to range from viscous oils, through elastomeric materials, to hard, brittle resins depending on the polymerization conditions.The structure of the copolymers was studied by chemical analysis for unsaturation and confirmed by infrared absorption spectroscopy. These studies show that soluble copolymers with much higher isoprene content than had previously been reported could be prepared under certain conditions.Reactivity ratios for the cationic copolymerization of propylene and isoprene were estimated.

AbstractSilica‐alumina‐titania was prepared by the hydrolysis of a mixture of ethyl orthosilicate, aluminum isopropoxide and ethyl orthotitanate followed by calcination. The catalyst consisting of silica‐alumina‐titania (wt. ratio 45:5:50) and triethylaluminum gave a linear polyethylene (mol. wt. 51.0 · 104) and polypropylene (mol.wt. 22.9 · 104) and the overall energy of activation of the polymerization of ethylene by this catalyst was found to be 6.4 Kcal/mole. The effects of the composition and the temperature of calcination of the silica‐alumina‐titania were investigated, and some kinetic features of the catalyst were discussed.In the polymerization of ethylene, this catalytic system is more active than the so‐called PHILLIPS catalyst (chromium oxide/silica‐alumina) and the so‐called Standard catalyst (molybdena‐alumina), but less active than the ZIEGLERcatalyst (i.e. TiCl4—AlEt3). The polyethylene produced by this catalyst has little branching and its molecular weight is comparable to that obtained

AbstractUne théorie sur les dimensions des macromolécules vinyliques isotactiques en solution a été développée selon la méthode des matrices de rotation, en supposant que par suite de l'agitation thermique les liaisons puissent tourner autour des positions d'équilibre qui sont celles que la macromolécule présente à l'état solide cristallin.Une application au cas du polystyrène est décrite, en supposant un modèle de potentiel très simple qu'est fonction de B, la demi‐ampleur de rotation permise, et de φ1et φ2, les asymétries de la configuration d'équilibre respectivement pour les rotations impaires et paires.Il en résulte que le facteur de structurea= (h̄2/h̄ 20)1/2calculé théoriquement a pour le polystyréne la valeur limite de 2,35 (qui est en parfait accord avec les mesures expérimentales) pour B1= B2= π/3.Le calcul théorique montre queaaugmente avec le nombre des liaisons de la chaîne et tend à devenir constant seulement pour de poids moléculaires très hauts, tandis que la valeur expérimentale demeure toujours constante.De ce fait on tire la conclusion que dans les calculs théoriques des dimensions de hauts polymères on doit introdui

AbstractA number of polyether glycols have been fractionated by liquid‐liquid extraction. The polymers fractionated were polypropylene ether‐glycol, mol. wt. 700, 1200, 1900, 2600, 3000; polyethylene ether‐glycol, mol.wt. 9,000 and 29,000; a modified polyethylene etherglycol, mol. wt. 20,000; and “Teracol”, a polyalkylene ether‐glycol, mol. wt. 3000.The molecular weights of many of the fractions were determined. The theoretical POISSONdistribution was confirmed for the lowest molecular‐weight polypropylene ether glycol.It was found that the polyether glycols deviated substantially from the predicted phase equilibrium behavior for polymers. The deviation was traced to the solubility differences of the hydroxyl end‐groups between hydrogen‐bonding and non hydrogen‐bonding solvents.This extraction procedure seems to be a general efficient method for fractionation of polyether glycols. AbstractThe thermodynamic functions of water sorption by polymethylstyrenesulphonic acid and its sodium salt have been determined by means of calorimetric and isopiestic measurements. The plots of these functions versus water content are presented for the range from 0 to 12 moles of water per equivalent of polyelectrolyte. A qualitative interpretation of the form of these plots is given and, at the same time, a comparison is made with the same plots of the corresponding cross‐linked analogues of the polyelectrolytes mentioned above, i.e., the polystyrenesulphonic acid resins in the hydrogen and sodium states. It is found that the differences between the values of these functions for the linear and cross‐linked polyelectrolytes are rather small and that, contrary to what might be expected, these values for the linear polyelectrolytes are closer to those of the highly cross‐linked r

AbstractDie Messung der Bruttokristallisation hochpolymerer Substanzen erlaubt erst mit Hilfe der AVRAMIschen Theorie Rückschlüsse auf die Kristallisationskinetik (Keimbildung und Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit). Die Frage, ob die für niedermolekulare Stoffe entwickelte AVRAMIsche Theorie wirklich auf Hochpolymere übertragen werden kann, bedarf einer eingehenden Prüfung. Es wurden daher mittels mikroskopischer Untersuchungen die Keimbildung und die Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit von isotaktischem Polypropylen in Abhängigkeit von der Kristallisationstemperatur getrennt gemessen und die so ermittelten Werte mit den aus der Bruttokristallisation nach AVRAMIberechneten Zahlen verglichen. Die übereinstimmung ist vorzüglich.Ferner wurde die Temperaturabhängigkeit der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit untersucht. AbstractMit einer Dichtewaage werden Kristallisationsisothermen von 4,6‐Polyurethan aufgenommen. Nach einer Beschreibung der Apparatur werden die Meßergebnisse im Temperaturbereich oberhalb 163°C und über Kristallisationszeiten von zehn Minuten bis zu zwei Tagen mitgeteilt.Zur Deutung der Kristallisationsisothermen wird zwischen Haupt‐ und Nachkristallisation unterschieden. Die Hauptkristallisation wird als Wachstum morphologischer Strukturen verstanden und die Nachkristallisation als langsame Verbesserung des mäßigen mittleren Ordnungsgrades innerhalb dieser Strukturen. Die Hauptkristallisation wird im Sinne von AVRAMI, EVANSund MORGANausgewertet. Für die systematischen Abweichungen von der AVRAMI‐Gleichung wird eine mögliche Deutung diskutiert.
