AbstractProduction and growth of a local strain of marineChlorellasp. was investigated under different pH levels ranging from pH 6.0–8.5 using 200 L capacity algal tubes. The results show that a pH of 6.5 will be most conducive for producing this species in a continuous culture system. The highest production was 136 g/m3/d with a mean of 117 ± 11 g/m3/d at pH 6.5 compared with other pH levels tested. The total fatty acid content was elevated at low pH levels and ω 3 PUFA increased as the pH was lowered from 8.5 to 6.5. AbstractChloroform‐methanol (2:1 v/v), absolute methanol, and 90% acetone were evaluated for their effectiveness as extractants of chlorophyllafrom samples of phytoplankton communities collected from catfish ponds. Chloroform‐methanol consistently extracted more chlorophyllathan either 90% acetone or methanol. Precision for the methanol extraction was also unacceptably low, with an average coefficient of variation of 17%. Average coefficients of variation for the chloroform‐methanol and 90% acetone extraction procedures were 6 and 5%, respectively. Filtered samples should be steeped in chloroform‐methanol for at least 4 h to obtain maximum chlorophyll extraction, and the addition of MgCO3to the extractant as a buffer is not ne

AbstractUnpredictable water levels for the Atchafalaya River resulting from man's efforts to prevent flooding in South Louisiana lead to an unstable market for Louisiana's annual crawfish production. Empirical models presented show that yields from the basin can be estimated on a monthly basis using bimonthly changes in water level, unemployment rates, and crawfish harvests from ponds. The monthly demand model for basin crawfish yielded a price flexibility of –0.059 and a corresponding price elasticity of –16.94. These empirical results support hypotheses that substitutes for crawfish are available to consumers. Uncertain yields from the basin due to the sort of water level fluctuations documented in this study suggest that investment in this area of the Louisiana crawfish industry will continue to be hampe

摘要:
AbstractThe East or perhaps a better term, Asia, is both a major producer and consumer of aquacultural products. Yet with a long history in the field of aquaculture, most countries have made little or no progress in the techniques and methods applied in this field. The Asian needs for aquaculture are also more basic in that aquaculture provides a cheap source of protein for the malnourished and undernourished populations. Development may be significantly affected by the wide income gap existing in these countries, by inequalities in educational quality and opportunity, and by social factors such as religion, taboos, or tradition. But on the whole, a better life for many of Asia's people may possibly be found in the development of its aquaculture potential.
