AbstractThe extensive studies of R.J. Anderson between 1926 and 1946 nad the subsequent work of Stenhagen, Polgar, and Cason, and of the author's laboratory have demonstrated the astonishing abilities of the tubercle bacillus in synthetizing lipids. Numerous branched‐chain fatty acids, glycolipids, peptidolipids, and peptidoglycolipds have been isolated, and their structures more or less elucidated. Such work is of interest not only to natural‐priduct chemists, and biochemists, but especially to biologists and pathologists who are concerned with the harmful effects caused by the tubercle bacillus. The present article discusses chiefly three points: 1. The biogenesis of the branched‐chain fatty acids. ‐ 2. The structures of several glyco‐, peptido‐, and peptidoglycolipids. ‐ 3. Adjuvant activity and immunization by the lipids of the tube

AbstractIf catechol or other hydroquinones are dehydrogenated in the presence of a nucleophilic reagent, the latter reacts, usually by Michael addition, with the quinone formed in situ. The wide range of possible variations offered by this synthetic method is comprehensively described in the present paper. procedures are given for carrying out typical reactions.

AbstractTwo new groups of reactive dyestuffs have been developed. One group (Levafix® dyes) comprises compounds which contain SO2NHCH2CH2OSO3H or CH2N(alkyl)‐CH2CH2OSO3H as reactive groups. AbstractThe unsaturated aldehyde acrolein is a suitable source for different types of high polymers. If it is regarded as a 1,3‐diene analogous to butadiene, then all the known modes of its polymerization can be systematically described and further possibilities predicted. A survey is given on this basis of the results obtained during the past decade. It is shown that acrolein is one of the few monomers which contain two polymerizable groups of differing reactivities. This fact allows the formation from acrolein of new homopolymers, copolymers, and graft copolymers, a scope which is not encountered with many other monomer

AbstractThe relationship between the metabolic throughput within the network of energy‐furnishing metabolism and the deviation of its composite reacting units from equilibrium is discussed. Measurements have been made of the steady‐state relaxation times, and, following a suggestion by Alberty, their application is described. The results confirm and extend the concepts of intracellular redox relationships which the authors' research group outlined five years ago in this journal. The maximum difference between the redox potentials of the lactate/pyruvate and of the DPN/DPNH systems was calculated to be 2 mV. Deviations of the α‐glycerophosphate/dihydroxyacetone phosphate system measured in vivo are correlated with the rate of flow in the glycerophosphate
