AbstractThe current state of quantitative analysis with the mass spectrometer in biochemistry and medicine is reviewed. The basic principles of mass spectrometry, the latter's combination with chromatography, the development of sensitive, exact, and in particular specific mass‐spectrometric methods of detection, and the principle of dilution with stable isotopes are illustrated by examples. The most important fields of application are: the pharmacokinetics of drugs and active metabolites, investigation of metabolic pathways, supporting of medical diagnoses and enhancement of their specificity, and finally checking the quality of simpler quantitative processes in clinical chemistr

AbstractPhotoacoustic spectroscopy is a new analytical tool that provides a simple nondestructive technique for obtaining information about the electronic absorption sprctrum of samples such as powders, semisolids, gels, and liquids. It can also be applied to samples which cannot be examined by conventional optical methods. Numerous applications of this technique in the field of inorganic and organic semiconductors, biology, and catalysis have been described. Among the advantages of photoacoustic spectroscopy, the signal is almost insensitive to light scattering by the sample and information can be obtained about nonradiative deactivation processes. Signal saturation, which can modify the intensity of individual absorption bands in special cases, is a drawback of the method.

Abstract17O‐NMR spectroscopy has found limited application as a structural probe due to the experimental problems associated with a quadrupolar nucleus having low natural abundance. A survey of data obtained from systematic studies of structurally related compounds shows, however, that large chemical shift differences are usually obtained for structurally nonequivalent nuclei, and that characteristic chemical shift values are observed for specific chemical environments.
