AbstractIn recent years, a revolution in the practice of organic chemistry has been brought about by the application of physical methods. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been especially important in this regard, but so many papers have been published dealing with its uses in organic chemistry that any brief review such as this one can only cover illustrative examples. After a general introduction, attention will be focussed here on several interesting structural and dynamic problems involving or related to research being carried on in our laboratories.

AbstractStarting from a consideration of the “undisturbed” SiOSi bond in the modification of silicic acid, the types of bonds present in silicates with polymeric SiOSi groups are discussed, taking into consideration the inductive effect of the metal cations. Experimental data on the influence of various substituents in organopolysiloxanes form the basis for this discussion. The bonds in silicates differ by direction and character and are determined by the relative ability of the metal atoms to act as donors and by the degree of condensation of the SiOSi bond. AbstractTo the somewhat casual observer, the concept “metal π‐complex” is primarily associated with the names “ferrocene” and “dibenzenechromium”. The preparation of these two compounds was in fact the starting point of a development which has had fruitful effects on theoretical as well as preparative chemistry and the limits of which are not yet in sight. In recent years, many straight‐chain and cyclic olefins with varying numbers of double bonds have been added to the list of ligands in metal π‐complexes, besides such “aromatic” systems as the cyclopentadienyl anion, benzene, and the tropylium cation. The literature in this area is already so copious that it seems advisable to adopt a division into compounds with mono‐olefins and those with di‐ and oligo‐olefins.
