Localized rf fields, namely, the high frequency resonance cones, were observed to be reflected near the electron plasma frequency layer in an inhomogeneous magnetized plasma. The reflection of fine structures due to electron thermal motions was also observed.

摘要:
The E×B drift due to an applied radial electric field in a tokamak with poloidal divertor can speed the flow of plasma out of the scrape‐off region, and provide a means of externally controlling the flow rate and thus the width of the density fall‐off. An experiment in the Wisconsin levitated toroidal octupole, using E×B drifts alone, demonstrates divertor‐like behavior, including 70% reduction of plasma density near the wall and 40% reduction of plasma flux to the wall, with no adverse effects on confinement of the main plasma.

摘要:
A new technique for directly measuring the safety factor, orq, profile in a tokamak is described. A tightly collimated neutral beam capable of injecting approximately 100 mA of 30 keV deuterium atoms was mounted on the Adiabatic Toroidal Compressor tokamak. By proper tangential aiming of the beam a strong concentration of circulating fast ions was created at a chosen plasma minor radius. Through examination of the orbits of these ions with a multi‐sight‐line charge exchange detector, it was possible to measure the shifts of the orbits off magnetic surfaces, and thereby make local measurements ofq. This experiement showed that whenqon axis reached unity, strong internal turbulence began, and further lowering ofqat the outer edge of the plasma did not lowerq(0). A second result was that the measuredq(0) was approximately 1.8 times larger than theq(0) deduced from theTe(r) profile, assumingZeffto be independent of minor radius. This suggests a significant peaking ofZeffon axis.

摘要:
A theory of the cyclotron maser interaction between an annular electron beam and the standing electromagnetic wave in a cavity structure is formulated on the basis of the relativistic Vlasov equation and the Maxwell equations. Detailed analytical expressions for the beam‐wave coupling coefficient, beam energy gain, and threshold beam power have been derived for the fundamental and higher cyclotron harmonics. Physical interpretations of these results and comparison with cyclotron maser interactions in a waveguide structure are presented. Methods of parameter optimization and their applications to experiments are illustrated through numerical examples.
