Extensions and corrections to Lam's theory of collisionless electrostatic probes are presented. A sheath is shown to exist for all finite potentials. The leading correction ofO′(he/Rp)2/3to the saturation current is determined.

The interaction of a modulated electron beam of modest current with a plasma formed in a hydrogen gas produces protons with energies up to several hundred electron volts. The energetic proton flux from the plasma is dependent on the beam current and modulation frequency.

Results are presented of calculations showing the effects of collision frequency and surface density gradient on the polarization of microwaves reflected from a plasma surface. Experimental observations are compared with these results and estimates made of collision frequency and density gradient.

An estimate is made of the maximum shear attainable in a toroidall= 3 stellarator. The loss of plasma due to universal instabilities in such a sheared system is compared with the Bohm loss rate. The maximum shear is compared with that obtained in other toroidal systems.
