The general expression for the ponderomotive Hamiltonian is used to obtain the quasi‐static quasi‐neutral density change caused by the ponderomotive force of a cold magnetoplasma wave of arbitrary frequency and polarization: &dgr;n(x) =−[‖E(x) ‖2−‖B(x) ‖2] /4&pgr; (Te+Ti).

Using the Krylov–Bogoliubov–Mitropolski method, the modulational instability of ion‐acoustic waves in a collisionless plasma consisting of isothermal electrons and adiabatic ions is studied. It is found that with the inclusion of ion temperature the modulational instability sets in much earlier.

The dispersion relation for hydromagnetic waves on a planar plasma sheet carrying an asymmetric current has been shown to be the same as that for a symmetric current. The relevance of this result to experimental observations is discussed briefly.

A relativistic particle‐in‐cell simulation code has been used to study the space‐charge limiting currents of a solid and an annular relativistic electron beam. The resulting limiting currents are significantly higher than that given by the widely used Bogdankevich–Rukhadze interpolation formula.
