摘要:
Observations of the fluctuations by electrostatic and magnetic probes are made in the toroidal octopole device. The plasma density is varied from5 × 108cm−3to 1010cm−3. The ion and electron temperatures are approximately 100 and 6 eV, respectively. The fluctuations exist only where the density gradient is large. The amplitude of the potential fluctuation is less than one‐hundredth of the electron temperature at the strongest magnetic field. A transmission experiment is performed to obtain the dispersion relation of the waves. Qualitative comparison with linear theory on instabilities singles out the drift cyclotron instability as consistent with the observations. Quantitative comparison with the computed dispersion relation is also made on the dependence on the magnetic field and the plasma density. The rate of transport of the plasma across the magnetic field estimated from the fluctuation amplitudes is orders of magnitude smaller than the rate obtained from the ion confinement time. The amplitudes can be reduced when the magnetic field is increased or when a small toroidal field is applied.
