The midplane microwave heating system in the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) [inProceedingsoftheSixthInternationalConferenceonPlasmaPhysicsandControlledNuclearFusionResearch, 1976 (IAEA, Vienna, 1977), Vol. II, p. 145] was supplemented with power launched from the high‐field side of the fundamental resonance by an antenna in the magnet coil throat. Up to 43 kW of polarized (extraordinary mode), 28 GHz power was successfully launched with one antenna. Measurements were made of changes in the core and hot‐electron ring plasma parameters when throat‐launch power was added. In sharp contrast to initial expectations, the bulk core‐plasma parameters were degraded while the ring parameters, in the launch cavity, were improved. These results are consistent with a modified picture of electron‐cyclotron heating (ECH) in EBT. A picture of localized microwave absorption and particle losses is supported by additional measurements.

摘要:
Filtered pinhole imaging is used to characterize spatially the fast ion emission at the target surface irradiated by a CO2laser in a planar geometry. The bulk of the fast ions is found to be fairly well correlated with the lateral transport of hot electrons in the target plane, i.e., a large concentration of rather low‐energy ions near the focal spot with total ion emission over a very large area. Higher‐energy ions show large emission nonuniformities and very small local cone angles somewhat difficult to explain.

The Kelvin–Helhmoltz stability of the cylindrical interface between two compressible fluids is studied when the arguments of the Bessel and Hankel functions are large. The real and imaginary parts of the wave frequency,c, are derived through numerical computations.

摘要:
A sufficient stability condition for the negative mass instability is derived. This condition is used to show that quasiconfined particles in a modified betatron create fields that can stabilize the negative mass instability. Additionally, it is shown that stellarator fields can inhibit this instability.

摘要:
The stability of a homogeneous plasma with currents along the magnetic field is investigated. It is found that electrons streaming along the magnetic field lines in a neutralizing positive ion background could excite lower‐hybrid instability. The critical drift velocity should exceed the parallel phase velocity for instability:Vd>&ohgr;r/k∥, where &ohgr;ris the lower‐hybrid frequency (&OHgr;e&OHgr;i)1/2. This condition is found to be easily met in the laboratory and space plasmas and is applicable both in the collisionless and collisional palsmas.
