摘要:
The justification for the installation of power system stabilisers at selected Scottish power stations is outlined. The selection process, specification and design criteria for these stabilisers are detailed and the eigenvalue analysis to achieve optimum gain settings and margins is explained. The paper proceeds to illustrate the theoretical improvement in interarea damping and to explore the errors which can be introduced by modelling a multiplicity of identical sets by a single equivalent machine. Finally, the studies where three generating sites have stabilisers in service indicate scope for further co-ordination to optimise the improvement.

摘要:
The paper is one of a series of five concerning power oscillations between the Central Electricity Generating Board and South of Scotland Electricity Board power systems. It describes techniques and instrumentation used to test power system stabilisers installed on 660 MW generators on the SSEB power system. The stabilisers were installed to improve damping of interarea mode oscillations, which had a characteristic frequency of around 0.5 Hz. The paper describes tests used to prove that the damping of other oscillatory modes (the local mode and intermachine modes) was not degraded by the addition of the stabilisers, and outlines methods used to measure generator and excitation control transfer functions.

摘要:
In 1978, dynamic instability of the Great Britain power system associated with power transfers from Scotland to England was first noted. To solve this problem power system stabilisers were applied to selected generators in Scotland. The paper describes the series of tests undertaken on the Great Britain power system between 1980 and 1985. The objective of the tests was to measure system damping with and without power system stabilisers in service, and with various combinations of stabilisers. The tests indicated that system damping was considerably improved by the use of power system stabilisers, such that operators now have the confidence to assume that the dynamic stability limit on transfers from Scotland to England is higher than the transient stability limit.
