The effects of MOI and of virion age on the RNA species from Moloney murine leukemia virus (MLV) and Moloney murine sarcoma-leukemia virus (MSV[MLV]) were investigated by electrophoresis on 2.4% polyacrylamide gels in the presence of 0.2% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The native RNA from MLV consisted of a species with an apparent molecular weight of 6.5 × 106 as well as low-molecular-weight material, and the profiles obtained were independent of MOI and virion age. Heat-denatured RNA from 5-min MLV consisted primarily of a species with an apparent molecular weight of 3.4 × 106 whereas that of 16-hour MLV consisted of a heterogeneous, continuous distribution of sizes ranging from 3.4 × 106 to 1.0 × 105 daltons. The nature of the RNA profiles for MSV (MLV) was dependent on the infection conditions used to produce the virus. If low MOI conditions were used, the RNA patterns were identical to those observed for the RNA of MLV alone, and the ratio of MLV/MSV in such stocks was approximately 60 as determined by bioassays. If high MOI conditions were used, the native RNA consisted of two high-molecular-weight classes, one having an apparent molecular weight of 6.5 × 106 and the other an apparent molecular weight of 4.0 × 106. Upon incubation of the native RNA at 80° for 3 min, both classes were converted to species with a molecular weight of 1.8 × 106. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and simian sarcoma virus (SSV-1/SSAV-1) each contain six proteins which were separated by gel filtration in 6 m guanidine hydrochloride. The major protein both of FeLV and of SSV-1/SSAV-1 has species and interspecies antigenic determinants, and both viruses contain additional viral proteins with distinct species-specific antigenic determinant. The interspecies antigens of two primate C-type viruses (SSV-1/SSAV-1 and gibbon ape lymphoma virus) appear to be nearly identical and react only weakly with the corresponding antigens of lower animals.

A radioimmunoassay for detecting the core of the Dane particle and antibody to it was developed. The core was detected in concentrates of Dane particles but not in preparations of purified 22-nm forms of hepatitis B antigen. Detergent treatment of Dane particles increased the detectability of the core. Antibody to the core appeared following acute type B hepatitis infection and could be consistently demonstrated in chronic carriers of hepatitis B antigen. Such antibody was found less frequently in patients with evidence of re-exposure to hepatitis B antigen; it could not be detected in pooled hepatitis B immune serum globulin.

摘要:
In immunized mice, penetration of the liver by 3H-thymidine or 3H-amino acid-labeled FV3 inoculated by the intraperitoneal route was inhibited, and the virus was blocked in the peritoneal cavity and in the intestine. The efficiency of such a peritoneal blockage has been demonstrated in non-immunized animals pretreated intraperitoneally with thorotrast. However, this is not sufficient to explain the protection observed after a large challenge dose of virus. Absence of penetration into the hepatic cells has been shown to be another mechanism involved in the protection of immunized mice.

Phleum mottle virus (PMV) and six strains of cocksfoot mild mosaic virus (CMMV) have similar but not identical host-ranges and cause similar symptoms. The particles of PMV and CMMV type strain (CMMV-1) are indistinguishable in most properties, but differ slightly in RNA base composition and in electrophoretic mobility. Particles of PMV and the CMMVs are closely related serologically but not identical. CMMV and PMV are not members of any of the well-defined virus groups.

The percentage of cells infected with lactic dehydrogenase virus (LDV) in primary mouse embryo cells was studied by immunofluorescent and infectious center assays. Data from both techniques indicated that only a small percentage of cells in the monolayers was infected and that each infected cell yielded at least 4,000 ID50 of virus. The finding of immunofluorescent-positive cells in primary cultures provides an additional method for detecting LDV and eliminates the need to do all assays in vivo.

Evidence is presented suggesting that the in-hibitory effect of Concanavalin A on the neuraminidase activity of various strains of influenza A virus is dependent on the juxtaposition of the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens of the respective strains.
