摘要:
Surgical litter restriction to one to five fetuses per rat, results in highly significant increases in fetal body and placental weight. Intrauterine crowding, competition, and the amount of nutrients available per fetus appear to be the limiting factors controlling fetal development. The interaction of ovarian and adrenal hormones was investigated by surgical removal of ovarian and adrenal tissue during litter restriction. Increased intrauterine growth does not appear to be directly controlled by the amount of ovarian and/or adrenal tissue per fetus.

Zinc balance was studied during the last trimester of pregnancy in four teenagers. Diets composed of natural foods and mineral salts contained 10.5, 15.0 and 19.5 g nitrogen, and 26, 29 and 32 mg zinc. Urinary zinc was 2 % of daily total excretion and was relatively constant for a given subject. Dermal losses were larger than anticipated, 2.8 mg/day, and constituted about 11 % of daily zinc loss. Fecal zinc was 87 % of total daily loss, and varied within subjects and treatment groups. The magnitude of fecal zinc loss was dependent on the volume of fecal dry solids passed and zinc content of dry fecal material was remarkably constant within subjects and treatment groups. Balance for all subject-treatments was about 4 mg/day.

Mature male rats fed rapeseed oil for 16 weeks had a higher incidence of cardiac lesions than did control rats fed a mixture of lard and corn oil. Both high-erucic and low-erucic rapeseed oils were associated with cardiac necrosis and fibrosis. A dose response in the incidence of such lesions was obtained after 16 weeks of feeding various levels of Span oil (B. campestris, 2.7-percent erucic acid), but with Oro oil (B. napus, 0.6-percent erucic acid) an increased incidence of lesions occurred only at the top levels. Zephyr oil (B. napus, 0.3–0.7-percent erucic acid) and a ‘deodorizer condensate’ diluted in olive oil were also associated with a high incidence of cardiac lesions. The bioavailability of iron in dried whole egg, ground beef, whole-wheat flour, enriched flour and FeSO4 was evaluated in terms of hemoglobin regeneration. Sixty weanling male rats were made anemic by feeding a semi-purified basal diet containing 7.8 p.p.m. iron. They were divided into six groups to be fed the basal diet or the basal diet substituted with appropriate amounts of each iron source for 3 weeks. It was calculated that the milligrams of iron converted to hemoglobin per 100 mg of iron consumed was 51 for the iron in FeSO4 diet, 45 for the iron in egg diet, 43 for the iron in beef diet, 33 for the iron in whole-wheat flour diet and 24 for the iron in enriched flour diet. The efficiency of converting iron in FeSO4 diets to hemoglobin iron is linear over a wide range of iron intakes between experiments and among laboratories.

Zinc was estimated in plasma, leukocytes, erythrocytes and urine of newly-diagnosed cases of diabetes. The patients were all underweight and belonged to socioeconomic groups known to subsist on predominantly cereal-based, calorie-deficient diets. The 24-hour excretion of zinc in urine was found to be significantly high. Evidence is presented to show that this may not be a mere consequence of polyuria. The levels of zinc in plasma, and blood cells were significantly low. It is postulated that hyperzincuria, in the face of a low availability of dietary zinc due to high phytate in cereals, may lead to these low circulating levels of zinc.

摘要:
Even at a molar ratio fructose:Fe = 106:1, fructose did not improve the poor bioavailability of ferric iron and had no effect on the better absorption of ferrous iron from therapeutic doses of 50 mg Fe. This was demonstrated for subjects with normal and depleted iron stores by intraindividual comparison of the whole-body retention of the absorbed 59 Fe. It is concluded that fructose complexes of ferric and ferrous iron are of no value in oral iron therapy.

Capillaries of quadriceps muscle from a 42-year-old patient with myocardial disease, probably due to alcoholism and/or thiamine deficiency, were studied by electron microscopy. Severe degenerative changes in the capillary walls were demonstrated: the basal lamina was found to be nearly three times as thick as that of normal controls. Furthermore, the basal lamina was frequently found to be duplicated and laminated; the electron-lucent spaces between the lamellae were filled with destroyed pericytes, a variety of cellular debris, undefined granular material, and isolated collagen fibrils. Occasionally, redundant basal lamina curls as well as empty basal lamina cylinders, probably remnants of capillaries, were found situated in the muscular interstitium.
