摘要:
Many small- and medium-sized companies making goods to customer order have problems in estimating their manufacturing costs. These problems increase as the product becomes increasingly customised, and cannot be built from a range of standard products and sub-assemblies. A cost-estimating system is described which develops a feature-based description of the product and a description of likely problems with communicating and interpreting order-related information. These descriptions are used by the system to match the enquiry to similar orders that the company has completed in the past. It is intended that the system provides more accurate cost estimates in a much shorter time than conventional approaches.

摘要:
The design of electrical machines is a complex problem which accounts for magnetic, mechanical and thermal aspects. All these problems may be described using the finite element analysis technique, coupled with CAD-techniques, offering a simple and flexible way for introducing the numerous data (machine geometry, grid, material characteristics etc.), and an easy way for interpreting the numerical results and postprocessing them. In the article we show how these problems are dealt with within a rather small group dealing with research and teaching in this area. However, this example is an indication for small- and medium-sized firms, which, given a limited amount of both human and financial resources, would like to benefit from recent computer developments for their products.

摘要:
The paper reports the design and implementation of a computer-assisted process planning system (PC-CAPP) for prismatic components used in the batch production of portable electric tools. The software incorporates various modules for component feature representation; automatic machine, toolings and process parameter selection; set-up planning; production time calculation and finally the report generation. The user-friendly software package has been developed on an IBM PC/XT compatible system. It provides a quick and efficient method for generating consistent process plans.

摘要:
The problems of investment appraisal and raising finance for Advanced Manufacturing in Electronics (AMIE) projects are described, as well as the effect the investment can have on costing systems. By showing how these problems may be overcome, it is seen that they have resulted from the incorrect application of accountancy principles. The need is to improve the understanding between engineers and accountants, rather than any change in principles. Investment in AMIE has to be considered in relation to its effect on the total company, rather than as a way to improving departmental efficiency; the nature of the company-wide benefits are described. This change in objectives can result in a change in the technology selected, and so the various areas of AMIE are discussed in terms of their potential benefits.
