摘要:
AbstractThe chlorination of ethylene in the liquid phase to form 1 : 2‐dichlorocthanc (ethylene dichloride), has been investigated in some detail, catalysts such as antimony trichloride and ferric chloride being employed, at temperatures between 4° and 44° c. The effect of excess of either reactant has been studied, and the use of mixtures of ethylene with methane tried. The influence of sunlight and water in these reactions, and the formation of by‐products such as 1:1: 2‐trichloroethonc and β‐β′‐dichlorodiethyl ether

摘要:
AbstractThe work on the chlorination at ordinary temperatures of the lower olefines in the liquid phase, and in the presence of ferric chloride and antimony trichloride as catalysts, has been continued, and the reactions of propylene have been studied. As with ethylene, the main reaction was that of addition at the double bond, but larger proportions of substituted by‐products were formed than with ethylene. Thus the chief product was 1 : 2‐dichloropropane (propylene dichloride). Of the five possible trichloropropanes, the 1:2: 3‐compound was predominant, but the 1:1:2‐ and 1:2: 2‐trichloropropanes were als

摘要:
AbstractThe chlorination of ethylene dichloride to form mainly 1:1:2‐trichloroethane has been investigated. Various catalysts have been tried, but with most of those described in the literature, e.g. antimony chloride, the reaction is slow in the absence of light; in the presence of sunlight substitution is rapid. The use of aluminium chloride leads to the formation of tetrachloroethanes.Smooth chlorination to trichloroethane is also possible by the use of sulphuryl chloride, with benzoyl peroxide as catalyst; the bulk of the sulphuryl chloride is recoverable with the aid of activated charcoa

摘要:
AbstractThe catalytic dehydrochlorination of propylene dichloride has been studied, with particular reference to the preparation of allyl chloride. Various solid catalysts have been tried, at temperatures between 200° and 450° c, but in every case mixtures of the three isomeric monochloropropenes have resulted. The most satisfactory performance was given by iodine at 450° c. which, at 0·5% concentration, gave 20°, conversion into mixed chloropropenes containing 31% allyl chloride. Side reactions were small, the yield of chloropropenes based on propylene dichloride consumed being 8

摘要:
AbstractThe moisture content of the residue obtained by evaporating sea water is shown here to be determined by the relative humidity of the air in which it is subsequently kept, provided that the storage temperature does not vary: samples of such sea salt corrode mild steel in proportion to their moisture contents. It follows that the extent of corrosion of mild steel by sea salt is governed by the relative humidity of the ambient air and that keeping the moisture content of the salt‐complex at 8% or less substantially prevents corrosion from this caus

摘要:
AbstractIn the present British Standard method for the determination of carbon dioxide in coals, the carbon dioxide evolved by reaction of the coal with dilute hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid is absorbed in barium hydroxide, and the excess barium hydroxide is titrated with hydrochloric acid. In Fuel Research Survey Paper No. 44, a method is described in which the carbon dioxide liberated is absorbed in soda‐lime and determined gravimetically. In this paper a third method based on the pressometric principle is described. The amount of carbon dioxide is determined by measuring the pressure developed in an apparatus of constant volume, the pressure and volume relationship having previously been determined using a known amount of sodium carbonat

摘要:
AbstractAn apparatus has been developed for the gravimetric determination of solids in steam by the continuous evaporation of large samples of condensate in a dust‐free atmosphere. A high rate of evaporation is achieved without actual boiling, perfect evenness of operation being made possible by frequent small increments of sample. The apparatus is completely automatic and trouble‐free and shuts itself down in the event of electrical breakdown, or at the completion of the evaporation of the sample. This is made possible by the use of an electronic control u

摘要:
AbstractAn examination has been made of the manner in which light passing through suspensions of solid materials in water, and the light scattered from such illuminated suspensions, depends upon the particle size of the suspension. The following conceptions are introduced: the specific extinction coefficient of a suspension (ē) and the specific nephelo‐value of a suspension (v̄)The examination has been made in order to find out how these two quantities vary with the grain size of white as well as of some coloured suspensions. For white suspensions, monodisperse preparations of barium sulphate produced by condensation and fractions of ground barytes produced by elutriation are used; for coloured suspensions, elutriated fractions of chromic oxide and of pyrolusite are used. Special care has been devoted to the production or suspensions with a very high grade of monodispersity. It is found that ē as well as v̄ for the white suspensions have a distinct maximum at grain sizes of the same order as the wavelength of the transmitted light, whereas ē by the coloured suspensions shows a maximum at grain sizes which are several times smaller than the corresponding grain sizes in the white suspe

摘要:
AbstractAn improved method for the estimation of combined fucose in ground seaweed samples is described. The oxidation of the fucose liberated on hydrolysis is conducted with periodate at a controlledpH, and the acctaldehyde liberated is estimated colorimetrically.
