摘要:
AbstractPlots of water‐rate and packing‐shape correction factors for four commonly used sizes of Raschig rings to use with a modified Fanning equation are given. These are for fluid rates commonly associated with distillation, as distinct from absorption.Experimental evidence is given to show the magnitude of the error involved in applying the results obtained with an air/water system to calculations concerning distillation syst

摘要:
AbstractA process for the production from the brown seaweedsLaminaria digitataandAscophyllum nodosumof calcium alginate of reasonably constant ‘grade’ (50‐100 centistokes) and composition (approx. 95% calcium alginate, 1·3% ‘weed residue’) has been developed on the 25‐1b. wet weed batch scale. Certain aspects of the process have been further examined on the large laboratory scale with particular reference to the initial water‐washing and acid‐leaching stages. Under the best conditions found yields of 85% and upwards ha

摘要:
AbstractIn a compressed gas saturated with water vapour the vapour pressure of the water exceeds the normal value by an amount which is greater than can be predicted by Poynting's thermodynamic relationship. A quantitative knowledge of this behaviour is important in the design of equipment for drying compressed gases, particularly for drying by refrigeration, which is commonly used in the low‐temperature separation of air.The equilibrium moisture‐content of compressed air at pressures from atmospheric to 200 atm, has been experimentally determined at temperatures between 15° c. and −35° c. It has been found that the vapour pressure of water and ice increases progressively as the total pressure on the system is increased and that the relative increase in vapour pressure at a particular pressure becomes grester as the temperature of the system is lowered. At a total pressure of 200 atm. and a temperature of −35° c. the water content of saturated air is more than three times the calculated value assuming the normal vapour pressure and 2.6 times that derived from Poynting's re

摘要:
AbstractThe methods for superfine grinding are reviewed in the light of recent experience at the Midland Coke Research Station during the grinding of coke and other materials. The wet and dry processes arc compared, and it is shown that with dry grinding the end of effective grinding is caused by caking of the material in the mill. Wet grinding, by avoiding ultimate caking, enables grinding to continue to n further stage. The effect of size and type of ball is discussed, and the benefits obtained by adding different alkalis and other materials during wet grinding are described and compared.

摘要:
AbstractThe action of various catalysts in the chlorination of α‐chloro‐ethylbenzene has been studied. Although the use of ferric chloride, antimony pentachloride and titanic chloride leads to decomposition with the evolution of hydrogen chloride, nuclear substitution takes place readily in the presence of stannic chloride. Iodine also has been found to be a very powerful and efficient catalyst, 0.25% being sufficient for the chlorination at room temperature. A surprising feature of the iodine‐catalysed chlorination is that part of the chlorine reacts by addition to the benzene nucleus; the pyrolysis of the chlorination product to split off hydrogen chloride, leaving normal nuclear‐chlorinated benzene derivatives, has also been inve
