摘要:
AbstractThe presence of acetylene in gas mixtures from vapour‐phase cracking of petroleum is a complication in the use of hydroxy‐alkylamine solutions of cuprous salts for concentration of ethylene.1Acetylene is frequently also a deleterious impurity in ethylene separated from such gases by other methods of gas separation. Two methods arc described for eliminating the acetylene from ethylene‐containing gases, one for ethylene fractions containing no more than traces of hydrogen, the other for mixtures containing hydrogen in substantial amounts. In the absence of hydrogen the acetylene impurity can be preferentially oxidized, using copper as catalyst, the small amount of residual excess oxygen which is necessarily added reacting with ethylene on the same catalyst and at the same temperature to give a gas free from both acetylene and oxygen. When hydrogen is present in amounts in excess of 4% (molar), small amounts of acetylene impurity, such as 0·5 to 1·0% (molar), can be preferentially hydrogenated without affecting the ethylene by the use of a reduced nickel‐chrome catalyst, the preparation of which is described. The efficiency of this catalyst is adversely affected by the presence of certain sulph

摘要:
AbstractThe deterioration of ethanolamine used in absorption plant is attributed principally to the formation of complexes of iron and ethanolamine. These salts have been isolated and synthesized their constitution, properties and the effect of their presence on the absorption process are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThe fatty oils from the seeds of Hyptis spicigera and Ocimum viride from Nigeria, and of O. kilimandscharicum, Euphorbia calycina, E. erythracac, and Charozophora plicata from the Sudan, have been examined with reference to their component fatty acids and their suitability as drying oils. The oils of H. spicigera, O. kilimandscharicum and Euphorbia calycina closely resemble conophor oil in their fatty acids and their high content of linolenic acid; that of E. erythracae is very similar to linseed oil in composition, and C. plicata seed oil resembles cottonseed oil in its proportions of linolcic, oleic and saturated acids, Features in the distribution, cultivation, or harvesting of the seeds under discussion would appear to present certain difficulties in their commercial exploitation as compared with Tetracarpidium (conophor), but it is clear seeds which yield oils equal or superior to linseed oil in drying properties, as indicated by their respective contents of linolenic glycerides.

摘要:
AbstractThe use of solid catalysts in the synthesis of vinyl chloride from hydrogen chloride and acetylene has been investigated. The advantages of employing catalysts in the finely powdered form has been demonstrated, and the value of granular pumice as support indicated. Alumina gel and silica gel have been tried as altematives to active charcoal; alumina gel proved successful.A brief account of the study of the mechanism of the vinyl chloride reaction, made by the late Dr. Mugdan, has been included.

摘要:
AbstractA recently described apparatus for the determination of traces of sulphur in organic compounds has been investigated. The original method described B vertical tube heated to 830° C. and packed with silica, on to which the sample was allowed to fall drop by drop, and burnt in a rapid current of air. The silica packing was quite unsatisfactory, but by substitution of an oxidation catalyst such as vanadium pentoxide on alumina, very satisfactory results me obtained, The apparatus requires little skilled attention, is rapid, and un be applied to a very wide variety of substances ranging in volatility from petrol to sperm oil

摘要:
AbstractIn the course of process development for the trypanocidal drug dimidium bromide, a study has been made of the Morgan‐Walls phosphoryl chloride cyclintion of 4:4′‐dinitro‐z‐bewmidodi‐phenyl to the corresponding pheananthridine. The reaction involves the readily isolated intermediate iminochloride which undergoes facile cyclization only in presence of certain inorganic halide catalysts. The analogy to the Friedel‐Crafts reaction is discussed.A novel synthesis of the same phenanthridine by direct interaction of 4 :4′‐dinitro‐2‐aminodiphenyl and benzotrichloride is reported. This reaction entails the intermediate formation successively of an amidine and the iminochloride, and also requires catalysis by metal halides. It has been developed to a much simplified process giving excellent over‐all yields.A new type of derivative of dimidium is also described. This is 2: 7‐diamino‐9‐butoxy‐9‐phenyl‐10‐methyl‐9:10‐dihydrophenanthridine (‘butoxide’); it is
