摘要:
AbstractData are given for the spectral line intensities of various trace elements in the cathode‐layer are when they are incorporated into different bases. The bases considered are alumina, silica, calcium carbonate and phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, chloride, and carbonate. The effects on the actual line intensities and on the ratios of the line intensities to those of iron as internal standard are considered. Most trace constituents gave their highest line intensities in the alumina base, whilst the more volatile trace constituents like copper, silver, zinc, bismuth, and cadmium tended to be greatly depressed by sodium chloride. Chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum were enhanced by calcium salts and depressed by silica. Constant intensity ratios for cobalt and nickel to iron were obtained in all bases except silic

摘要:
AbstractTwo simple methods for the removal of small representative samples from carrots are described:(a)in the sector method narrow sectors are out and weighed;(b)in the cylinder method small rods are bored out and measured. The latter method is suitable for sampling in the field; the roots survive and may be replanted and grown on for seed production. A simplified and rapid procedure for the estimation of total carotenoids in the samples is described. The pigments are extracted with cold light petroleum‐acetone, and colorimetric determinations made directly on this solution. Carotene averages M% of the total carotenoids in mature carrot

摘要:
AbstractElectrometric titration with silver nitrate in presence of nitric acid using a silver/silver chloride reference electrode has proved a simple and rapid method for the estimation of chloride in meat products. Diluted curing brines may be titrated directly; the chloride in meats cannot be titrated directly but can be almost completely extracted by two extractions merely with water.

AbstractThe storage of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and spinach at room temperature resulted in loss of vitamin‐Cat different rates. These rates were greatly reduced by lowering the storage temperature to 3°c., in fact at 3°c. increases in the amount of vitamin‐Cpresent in lettuce, broccoli and cabbage were actually observed during the first 2 days of the storage period. There appeared to be some correlation between the loss of vitamin‐Con storing and the general withering and deterioration in the appearance of the ve

摘要:
AbstractPreliminary separation of mixed fatty acids by crystallisation from solvents at low temperatures, according to the technique of J. B. Brown1and his colleagues, is preferable to lead salt separation in the cases of fats which contain only small proportions of saturated acids. The procedure, coupled with subsequent ester‐fractionation, has been applied to the acids of sunflower seed, sesame, and groundnut oils (all of which have oleic and linoleic acids as their major components). The results agree well with earlier analyses in which lead salt separation had been employed. To some extent, acid fractions in which linoleic and oleic acids are respectively concentrated can also be obtained by the low‐temperature crystallisation proced

摘要:
AbstractThe fat in the thin brown testa of the palm kernel (Elœis guineensis) contains more oleic and linoleic acids, and less lauric acid, than that of the endosperm; linoleic acid amounts to 5% or more, and oleic acid to 20–25%, of the total fatty acids (the corresponding proportions in the endosperm fat being about 1% and 11–12%). The proportion of free fatty acids in the testa fat was about three times that in the enclosed kernels or endosperm, but the proportions of the component acids in the acidic part of the fat did not differ sensibly from those in the neutral testa fat. The higher proportion of free fatty acids is probably due to the testa fat being more accessible to lipolytic enzymes introduced from moulds at the outer surface of the ker

摘要:
AbstractA simple method of estimating the amounts of sulphur mono‐ and di‐chlorides in technical thionyl chloride is described. It has been shown that small amounts of sulphur chlorides in thionyl chloride are hydro‐lysed by excess of water to give polythionic acids. Iron catalyses a reaction between thionyl chloride and sulphur, producing sulphur mono‐chloride. The former reaction has been made the basis of a satisfactory analytical method and difficulties caused by the latter reaction have been o
