摘要:
AbstractThe grinding of potato starch in a ball mill breaks up the granules, and the starch is rapidly converted to a form entirely soluble in cold water j the two changes proceed at a much greater rate with potato starch than with wheat starch.

摘要:
AbstractPreliminary crystallization of the mixed fatty acids of marine animal oils from acetone at —60°, followed by ether at —30° or —40°, resolves them into groups, differing widely in unsaturation, which can then be esterified and fractionally distilled. This procedure has great advantages compared with the lithium and lead salt separations which were previously employed. The method has been applied to the component acids, and also to the component glycerides, of the blubber oil of a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus). The composition of the fatty acids of seal blubber oil varies over a somewhat wider range than obtains in the fatty oils of some other marine species. The glycerides belong to the extremely ‘“mixed” type characteristic of marine animal oils. The seal liver contained less than 3% of lipids, which consisted of 29%’ phosphatides, 21% unsaponifiable matter and 50% glycerides 5 the liver glycerides contained a less unsaturated mixture of fatty acids than the blubber glycerides and also a higher content of satur

摘要:
AbstractThe hardening of phenol alcohols yields as primary products dibenzyl ethers, which hence occur in phenolic resins. Methods for the determination of the dibenzyl ether linkage are described, which depend on its fission by hydrobromic acid. It is shown that methods depending on analysis of the resulting bromomethyl compounds may be unreliable, but that satisfactory results may be obtained if the water eliminated in the fission is estimated by the Karl Fischer reagent. The necessary apparatus and technique are described, and results given for a series of pure dibenzyl ethers and various phenolic resins.

摘要:
AbstractThe method of fluorination using antimony pentachloride and hydrogen fluoride1has been closely investigated. The results show that the composition of the products is closely linked with the catalyst concentration, and that monofluorides disproportionate to a mixture of the difluoride and original chlorine‐containing compound under the influence of antimony pentachloride. The reaction has been extended by the use of stannic chloride as a much milder catalyst than antimony pentachloride for monofluorinatio

摘要:
AbstractThe preparation and properties of glass polishing powders composed of the cerium group of rare earth oxides are described. The oxides arc produced by igniting the corresponding hydroxides, milling the product to break up aggregates and elutriating to remove undesirable residues.

摘要:
AbstractAn account is given of the more academic aspects of the research work carried out in Germany and elsewhere during the war years, and on this basis a picture of the catalyst and its method of working is developed. The reacting gases reach the catalyst surface directly in atmospheric pressure synthesis, but by solution in and diffusion through the wax that fills the pores of the catalyst in medium pressure synthesis. The cobalt atoms appear to be isolated and do not form part of a cobalt lattice. Reaction by way of chemisorbed carbon atoms‐surface carbide‐is thought to give an array of inter‐acting methylene groups on the surface, and the composition of the products, which are obtained by desorption from this array, depends on the condi

摘要:
AbstractThe reaction of one g.‐atom sulphur, six g.‐atoms bromine and an excess of water has been studied. The reaction takes place in at least two steps, the first being the formation of sulphur mono‐bromide, the second the reaction of this compound with bromine and water. The reaction results in the formation of hydrobromic acid and sulphuric acid. Hydrobromic acid has a retarding influence on the formation of sulphur monobromide but accelerates the reaction of sulphur monobromide with bromine and water. A method for the preparation of hydrobromic acid was worked out based on these observa
