AbstractThe prevention by sodium nitrite of the attack of sea water on steel has been studied in two ways.(a) Observation of the extent and nature of corrosion of mild steel specimens partially immersed in sea water containing nitrite.(b) Measurement of the corrosion currents using a divided cell.The appearance of a widespread brown discolouration on the steel at the higher nitrate concentrations is discussed and a catalytic mechanism is suggested for the inhibiting action of nitrite.The effect of mixing phosphates and nitrite is reported.

AbstractSteel specimens partly immersed in calcium bicarbonate solution develop a white band of calcium carbonate, the cathodic product, along the water‐line. When subsequently the surface is more deeply immersed in fresh bicarbonate solution, and heat conveyed to the liquid through the steel, the distribution of the calcium carbonate thrown out by thermal decomposition is almost unrelated to that of the calcium carbonate produced in the previous corrosion stage. AbstractThe sample of superphosphate is extracted with water, and the solution titrated with carbonate‐free sodium hydroxide in two stages with appropriate indicators. The first stage gives the free acid, and the second stage an approximate result for the primary calcium phosphate, Ca(H2PO4)2. A suitable volume of the sodium hydroxide is then titrated with the superphosphate solution, giving a reading from which a more accurate value for the primary calcium phosphate can be obtained. AbstractIn previous communications,1,2,3the seasonal variation over a period of two years in the ash, iodine, crude protein, mannitol, laminarin and alginic acid contents of the Laminariaceae common to Scotland, has been reported, while in. a later paper,4the variations in the above constituents were given for the common littoral seaweedAscophyllum nodosum.The work has now been extended to include the other common littoral algae, namely,Fucus serratus, Fucus vesiculosus, Fucus spiralisandPelvetia canaliculataand the results have been correlated with the depth of immersion of these algae.

AbstractThe fungistatic activity of the methyl ton‐amylp‐amino‐benzoates and of theortho, metaandpara‐aminobenzoic acids and their methyl esters has been determined in the inhibition of the growth rate ofAspergillus niger, Byssochlamys fulvaandPenicillium roqueforti.An increased inhibition ofP. roquefortiin the presence of nitrate nitrogen,pHbeing maintained at about 3.5, has been noted and provision made to avoid this effect, as well as the complications mentioned in an earlier paper.The data are treated (i) on the basis of the reciprocal of concentration required for 50% inhibition (I50); (ii) as related to an adsorption phenomenon. On the basis of I50values there is a general increase in activity from the methyl to the amylp‐amino‐benzoate, also themetaisomer is markedly less effective than the correspondingortho‐orpara‐compound. The adsorption approach has proved of little use withP. roqucforti, but withB. fulvait seems to permit a useful analysis of the activity of the esters, particularly in terms of increasing biological adsorbability.
