Fine structure studies show that (1) the terminal cell is an elongated thin‐walled and fenestrated basket with a multiciliary flame. Many short curved microvilli are confined to the cell lumen, while longer straight microvilli project from the cell's apical end into the proximal part of the protonephri‐dial capillary, forming a sheath around the flame. The filtration area consists of slits between narrow cytoplasmic bars and is entirely confined to the terminal cell, which consequently is defined as a flame bulb, not closely similar to those of other phyla. (2) The protonephridial capillary is short and narrow, with few scattered cilia and luminal microvilli. (3) The coiled tubule is thick‐walled, with several ciliated cells very rich in glycogen. Digestive gland esterases and albumen gland proteins ofArion(Carinarion)fasciatus, A. (C.) circumscriptus, A. (C.)silvaticus, A. (Kobeltia)hortensis, A. (K.)distinctus and A. (K.)intermediuswere studied using vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and isoelectric focusing (IEF). Each of the threeCarinarionforms revealed characteristic and nearly monomorphic electrophoretic profiles. Yet some variation was also observed. Within each form the mean intraspecific similarities, calculated from IEF profiles, were high in comparison with similar figures forA. hortensisandA. distinctus. The interspecific similarities, however, were low and of about the same magnitude as those of theKobeltiaspecies. These results are discussed in the light of the reproductive biology of theCarinarionspp. It seems convenient to retain the three namesA. fasciatus, A. circumscriptusandA. silvaticus, even though these do not necessarily refer to actual biological species.

Although tanaids are thought of as a largely tubicolous order of peracarids, relatively few species have in fact been recorded from tubes. However, many species of the genusTyphlotanaisrecently collected from deep‐sea sediments are tubicolous and attach or incorporate a wide range of materials to a mucous tube formed of secretions from glands within the pereonal cavity. The present paper discusses the use of myocardial ultrastructure, and its merits, in studies of crustacean phylogeny. It is argued that different modifications of the heart do not affect the membrane systems of the myofibers and that the membrane systems are independent of size and/or adaptation of the species. Finally, the phylogenetic implications of the membrane systems are considered. Using the myocardial membrane systems in addition to the cephalothorax (carapace), compound eyes, respiratory system and heart anatomy, a new phylogenetic arrangement of the larger eumalacostracan orders (Anaspidacea, Amphipoda, Cumacea, Decapoda, Euphausiacea, Isopoda, Mysidacea, Tanaidacea) is suggested. The isopods are regarded as a sister group to the other eumalacostracans.

Orb‐weaver spiders from Israel of the generaAraniella, Zygiella, ZillaandMangora, and Lebanese spiders of the genusMetellinahave been revised. Species ofZygiellaandZillaare recorded for the first time from Israel. The occurrence ofAraniellaspecies formerly not known from Israel has been proved and new authenticated records ofMangora acalyphafrom this country are provided. Descriptions of the hitherto unknown male ofZygiella inconveniensand a new species, Z.poriensis, are given. Notes onMetellinaspecies from Lebanon, including an erroneous determination, are discussed. Apistogramma diplotaeniasp.n. occurs in the upper and middle Rio Negro. The largest among 186 specimens studied is a 29.2 mm SL male, the largest female is 22.9 mm SL. Distinguishing characters include a unique colour pattern, consisting of two dark bands along the side which converge anteriorly and posteriorly. A comparative osteological study, including other species ofApistogrammaand the generaTaeniacaraandApistogrammoides, indicates a progressive forwards loss of infraorbital ossicles and foramina among dwarf cichlids. The long, rod‐like interarcual cartilage ofApistogramma, ApistogrammoidesandSatanopercapossibly represents a plesiomorphic condition otherwise unknown among cichlid
