AbstractThe hydroid and medusa ofStauridiosarsia producta(Wright, 1858) are reported for the first time from the New England coast of North America. The laboratory reared hydroid exhibits variation encompassing the previously reported forms from England and Helgoland. Nematocysts of the hydroid are stenoteles of two sizes. Young medusae have nematocysts irregularly scattered over the exumbrella. These are lost after 5–7 days. The characteristic umbilical canal of the medusa becomes distinct about 24 hours after liberation. Development to sexual maturity requires about 30 days. AbstractIn the present study the author continues the revision of several species of the genusArctodiaptomusKiefer. Based on a detailed morphological comparison of animals from 34 different localities the speciesArctodiaptomus similis(Baird),A. dudichiKiefer,A. stephanidesi(Pesta) andA. byzantinusMann are redescribed.Arctodiaptomus osmanusis characterized as a new species. ForA. similisa list of synonyms is given. The centre of distribution of this interesting diaptomid seems to be in Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Some populations are known also from Iran, Anatolia and Bulgaria.A. byzantinusis found not only in SE‐Europe but recently also in the peninsula of Krim. Finally, there are only two habitats known ofA. osmanus, both situated in 2 000 m above sea‐level in NW Turkey and in Armenia.ZusammenfassungVerfasser setzt in der vorliegenden Studie seine Revisionsarbeit an mehreren Arten der Gattung Arctodiaptomus Kiefer fort. Arctodiuptomus similis (Baird), A. dudichi Kiefer, A. stephanidesi (Pesta) und A. byzantinus Mann werden auf Grund neuer vergleichend‐morphologischer Untersuchungen eingehend gekennzeichnet und A. osmanus als neue Spezies in die Wissenschaft eingefuhrt. Fur A. similis wird eine Liste von Synonymen rusammengestellt. Der Schwerpunkt der Verbreitung dieses interessanten Diaptomiden scheint in den Landern des ostlichen Mittelmeers zu liegen, namlich in Israel, Libanon und Jordanien. Einzelne Funde stammen auBerdem aus Iran, Zentral‐ und West‐Anatolien sowie aus Bulgarien. A. byrantinus ist nicht nur in Siidosteuropa verbreitet, sondern konnte nunmehr auch fur die Halbinsel Krim nachgewiesen werden. A. osmanusschlieDlich ist vorerst nur aus zwei 2000 m hoch gelegenen Seen in Nordwest‐Anatolien und in Armen

AbstractThe type series ofRanatra compressicollishas been critically studied for the first time since its original description with particular reference to its unusual features. The genusAmphischizopsproposed by Montandon for this species in a note after the original description is made a synonym ofRanatra. A brief resumé of the New WorldRanatrawith special emphasis on the male genitalia compared with Old World species is followed by a discussion of the generic concepts of the Nepidae which tends to show that certain features of the male genitalia are of little value at the generic or subfamily level as an aid to the classification of the Nepidae

AbstractElofsson, R. and Löfqvist, J. (Zoological Institute, University of Lund, S‐223 62 Lund, Sweden.)The Eltringham organ and a new thoracic gland: ultrastructure and presumed pheromone function. Zool. Scr. 3 (1): 31–40, 1974.—Eltringham's organ is a club‐like projection from the posterior margin of hind‐wings of some myrmeleontid insects. It bears laterally directed setae, each having a specialized epidermal cell beneath, which gives off secretion into a sub‐setal lumen. The lumen continues into the wall of the moat‐like socket of the setae. Eltringham's organ fits into an excavation of the lateral body wall connected with the opening of a thoracic gland. The thoracic gland in these animals has not previously been described. It consists of a hollow tube, feebly developed in females. The tube wall houses two cell types: gland cells and cuticular cells. The latter form the cuticle of the general duct lumen and a specialized duct leading from each gland cell. The gland cells have a microvilli‐filled cavity which collects the secretion. AbstractFrancillon, Hélène (Laboratoire d'Anatomie Comparée, Université de Paris VII, F‐75005 Paris, France.)Développement de la partie postérieure de la mandibule deSalmo trutta farioL. (Pisces, Teleostei, Salmonidae). Zool. Scr. 3 (1): 41–51, 1974.—Study of the origin and development of the various bones forming the posterior part of the mandible ofSalmo fariohas shown that: (a) The articulo‐angulo‐splenial bone, a single bone in the adult, originates from several separate components. The angular part appears in the young trout as a thin bony plate on the external surface of Meckel's cartilage. Later, close to the articulation with the quadrate this bony plate becomes perichondral and extends so as to surround the cartilage completely. Meanwhile, on the ventral part of this parachondral bony plate there develops the splenial component, a bony tube surrounding the preoperculo‐mandibular sensory canal. Meckel's cartilage is then deeply eroded and under the articular cartilage a number of enchondral bony bands are laid down on the cartilage representing the articular part of the bone. (b) The retro‐articular bone starts as a perichondral ossification covering the posterior extremity of the retroarticular process of Meckel's cartilage. It acts as attachment for the ligaments connecting this process with the epihyal and the interopercular. It is completed by endochondral ossification of the same process. (c) The sesamoïd articular is an ossification from the base of the adductor mandibularis muscle.RésuméL'étude de la genése et du développement des diverses piéces osseuses constituant la partie postérieure de la mandibule de Salmo fario a montré que: (a) L'articulo‐angulo‐spénial, 0s unique chez I'adulte, a pour origine plusieurs ébauches d'emblée coalescentes. Le composant angulaire apparait chez I'alevin sous la forme d'une mince lame osseuse sur la face externe du cartilage de Meckel. Ultérieurement, au voisinage de la zone d'articulation avec le carré, cette lame osseuse devient périchondrale et s'étend tout autour du cartilage de Meckel. Entre temps, sur la partie ventrale de cette lame parachondrale, s'est édifié un canal osseux autour du canal sensoriel préoperculo‐mandibulaire (composant splénial). Le cartilage de Meckel est alors trés profondément érodé et, sous le cartilage articulaire, se deposent quelques travées d'os enchondral qui représentent le composant articulaire. (b) Le rétroarticulaire débute par une ossification périchondrale coiffant I'exérkmité postérieure du processus rétroarticulaire du cartilage de Meckel. II sert d'attache aux ligaments reliant ce processus a 1'épihyal et a I'interopercule. I1 se complete par une ossification enchondrale de ce même processus. (c) Le sbamolde articulaire provient de l'ossificat
