摘要:
The National Health Service is facing a period of significant transformation extending from its organizational structure and funding to the way in which patients are cared for and where. These reforms are having a profound effect on nursing, its traditional practices and its management. The challenges facing nursing over the coming years are also expected to progressively influence the corporate role of the trust nursing director. This paper documents the findings of a study, initiated by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority during 1991, aimed at identifying the specific set of competences that incumbent and designate trust nursing directors, and/or their future successors, will need to develop in order to successfully fulfil their future roles. It proposes a three stage evolutionary role for the trust nursing director and highlights the processes that are being implemented within the Region to support the personal development of required competences.

摘要:
A manager in any organization is responsible for ensuring both that the necessary work is completed and that it is done well. Endeavouring to achieve this unaided will not only leave the manager frustrated and exhausted, but will also result in his/her inability to fulfill his/her managerial responsibilities as a consequence of attempting to do work which could reasonably have been given to others. Nurse managers are no exception. Delegation is the means by which the manager can secure the assistance of others, which not only helps to ensure that the work will get done, but also provides those others with the opportunity to participate more fully. Regarded by many as a difficult skill to master, this paper considers some of the issues surrounding effective delegation.

摘要:
This paper examines the purpose of rewards and explores their theoretical base. The implications to managers are identified and an examination of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards for nursing and other staff within the National Health Service NHS is undertaken. Job content and context are explored. The limitations imposed on a public sector organization are identified as well as some of the resulting national benefits. Job design is seen as crucial, both as part of a reward system and as a means of enabling health services to respond flexibly through current changes.

摘要:
Different aspects of the work environment influence employee's attitudes, perceptions and professional performance. Most of the characteristics of staff nurses SN work environment included in this research were found to influence their perception of the desired and actual professional role: method of work organization, ward size, hospital size and variables contributing to the ‘atmosphere’ of the ward: participation in decision making, independence, relations on the ward and encouragement to continue studies. The research's findings provide support for role theories which are examined, using the integrated model of the two main branches of role theory, by reflecting the influence of environment on role expectations and realization. The research points to the fact that the staff nurses satisfaction with their work is related to the degree to which their work environment enables them to use their professional knowledge and skills, and to the degree to which her concept of ‘nursing’ concurs with that expected of them in the clinical setting. The research's findings allow applicable recommendations in hospital nursing man

摘要:
In this paper the available research on staff attitudes and feelings of hospital staff facing the closure of their long‐stay hospital is presented. A simple model focusing upon frequent managerial problems during the process of closure is proposed and discussed.Good two‐way communication networks, regular supervision/support, ongoing staff training, and the compilation of a personal portfolio are considered. Some tentative research‐based suggestions for managers embarking upon closure are pres
