摘要:
The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of qualified nurses on the implementation of staff appraisal. The sample consisted of eight nurses, varying in age, professional status and experience, within the clinical area in a hospital located in the South of England. Each participant was interviewed in depth. The unstructured interviews were then transcribed, coded and analysed in line with the strategies of grounded theory. The data yielded several important factors which require consideration by senior nurses and managers if they are to execute appraisals effectively. Contrary to expectations, the majority of participants expected, and even eagerly anticipated, the implementation of appraisals. However, several informants expressed concern that appraisals may be used against them. ‘Gaining direction and purpose’ was seen by staff as the main benefit of the appraisal from a personal and organizational point of view. Recommendations were made which might facilitate the implementation of future appraisal schemes throughout the organizat

摘要:
This paper reviews relevant literature and discusses the results of a small study designed to investigate how nurses are responding to the changes in the structure of the NHS which have reduced their role in management. The findings suggest that nurses who are currently at F grade level and their clinical nurse managers (CNM) are aware of the need for nurses seeking career progression to participate in education and training programmes related to nursing and management, particularly those which provide recognized qualifications, and that many are currently striving to achieve this. The findings also suggest that nurses want support to enable them to undertake further study, but that due to increasing pressure of work it is becoming more and more difficult for CNMs to provide the level of support they consider helpful. Nurses and CNMs urge those developing courses in management to ensure that courses are flexible to enable varying types of participation and tailoring to individual needs.

摘要:
The issue of patient empowerment has been commonly debated in nursing journals in the 1990s as its NHS popularity has grown. We discuss here how this issue impacts on the role of the nurse by examining a number of key features of this popular term, given that it underpins our strategic direction as a nursing development unit.

摘要:
School nurses play an important role in the preventive health care of children and adolescents. This study aimed to describe and investigate the school nurses' different activities and time spent on these activities. By completion of a time study record form all 26 school nurses, in a medium‐sized town in Sweden, documented their activities during 10 working‐days. Altogether 635 record forms were received. It was found that almost half of the school nurses' time was used for individual pupil activities, 17% for groups of pupils and 34% for administrative activities. School nurses spent 17% of all their working time at the school clinic, which in some way may reflect the pupils' need of the nurse in the school. These results highlighted the importance of school nurses and resulted in internal structural changes of school nurses' working t

摘要:
This paper begins with the presentation of the problems encountered by the nursing staff in their everyday practice and during the introduction of supervision in the field of nursing. This is a didactic and supportive method which might encourage and enhance nurses' professional development and personal growth. The paper continues with a description of the author's personal experience and knowledge of supervision gained during the course on supervision organized by the University of Nijmegen within the Trans‐European Mobility Project for University Studies (TEMPUS, 1992–1994), and also during an authentic supervision session the author actively took part

摘要:
This paper describes the relationship between the professional nursing and managerial imperatives in health care and explains some of the ways the managerial culture affects the working environment of professional nurses. It goes on to highlight some of the professional developments of the last 17 years and describes how these could augment the difference in imperatives. Finally it suggests ways in which the nursing profession might develop to maintain its unique contribution to health care, whilst embracing the managerial domain. This is necessary to ensure that professional nursing is nurtured and not overwhelmed by workloads and empirical assessments of nursing outputs.

摘要:
Despite an increasing commitment to expanding scholarly/research activities within the discipline of nursing and the overwhelming agreement on its value, scholarship progress has been relatively slow within the subdiscipline of nursing administration. The vast majority of nurse administrators are preoccupied with strategic and operational management and give limited attention to nursing scholarly/research activities. Nurse administrators appear to have embraced the idea of research and scholarship but perhaps have yet to become widely involved. This paper explores some of the issues related to scholarship/research activities in nursing administration.
