Quantitation of red cell agglutination can be made by counting the residual free cells remaining after agglutination and comparing the count with the pre‐agglutination red cell count. Most previous studies have used visual hemocytometry for this purpose. The use of the Coulter Model B electronic particle counter has been investigated and is shown to be a practical alternative.The problem of counting a free cell population overlapped in size by small aggregates is approached by two methods. In the first, a correction is made for aggregates present in the size range of single red cells based on the change in mean particle volume which results from the presence of cell clumps. In the second, red cells are counted in a size range in which aggregates are unlikely to occur. The purpose of this investigation was to examine salivary secretion of A, B and H blood group substances in gastric cancer subjects of two ethnic groups, the Asian Japanese with a known increased incidence of the disease and the U.S.A. Whites with an intermediate incidence of the disorder. Eighty‐two histologically proven cases of stomach cancer and 130 control subjects from U.S.A. and 212 cases of cancer of the stomach and 177 control subjects in Asian Japanese were tested for salivary blood group substances. It was found that by mean tube titer analysis U.S.A. Whites with gastric cancer secreted more H substance than controls (p<0.001), and possibly more A substance (p<0.05). By similar analysis, Japanese with gastric cancer did not secrete more of these substances as compared to their controls.When all subjects tested were assigned either secretor or non‐secretor status on the basis of bi‐modal distribution behavior, then more secretors were found in the Japanese gastric cancer group than in controls (p = 0.01), and a similar trend was seen in U.S.A. Whites (p.<0.05).Some observations on blood group secretor phenomena and disease are reviewed, and a speculation is offered in regard to a possible mechanism of importance in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer. This speculation attempts to relate neoplasia of gastric epithelial cells to introduction of viral DNA, and the suggestion is made that virus might find it easier to penetrate a cell containing A substance rather than one containing H substance or none a

Present blood bank practices of using either clotted blood or ACD pilot tubes stored at 4 C. give equally satisfactory antigen preservation up to 21 days of storage. Thereafter, there is a distinct difference, in that the pilot tube blood sample stored in ACD retains antigen reactivity for a longer period of time than does the blood stored as a clot. The added difficulty of the repeated washings of the ACD stored sample required to remove traces of plasma and anticoagulant must be considered in evaluating the advantages of either system. The anticipated use of storage formulae capable of maintaining better preservation of the stored blood for periods up to 42 days requires that the problem of the “proper” pilot tube be reconsidered. In this light, the preliminary serum screening of all recipients, using fresh pools of red cells bearing all the important known blood factors, becomes valuable. It is therefore recommended that the screening test be adopted by all blood banks and that particularly careful attention be directed to crossmatching tests on stored blood approaching the expiration d

The results of a blood group antibody survey carried out with the cooperation of 20 blood grouping laboratories are given. These results are used in a discussion of the antiglobulin phase of compatibility tests as they are outlined in the AABB Standards for a Blood Transfusion Service. A total of 37,961 irregular antibodies were reported. 37,811 or 99.6% of these antibodies could be detected by routine screening procedures using a pool of red cells from two or three selected donors, provided the pool contained the red cell antigens present in more than 2.5% of the Caucasian population. Only 145 or 0.4% of the reported antibodies would not be detected by such a routine screening test due to the fact that they react with red cell antigens present in 0.5% or less of the Caucasian population. Based on the antibody survey and a report of the antibodies responsible for 222 hemolytic transfusion reactions reported from 18 of the laboratories, a case is made for the use of routine antibody screening before all crossmatching procedures. If a carefully controlled screening test is negative it seems unnecessary to carry out the antiglobulin phase of the crossmatch. The serum or saline and high protein phases are still obligatory. If the screening test is positive, the antibody can be identified, making possible selection of suitable donor bloods before crossmatching is undertaken.

A method for determining glycerol in citrated blood is described. It was found that citrate ions produce interfering turbidity when the procedure recommended by Bailey is applied to glycerol‐citrate‐blood mixtures. The addition of absolute alcohol during deproteinization results in the precipitation of citrates and eliminates the need for zinc sulfate and its subsequent removal by the addition of excess barium hydroxide.
