Blood was collected into Acid Citrate Dextrose solution (ACD) from a group of 20 large, adult rhesus monkeys. In ten of the experiments, the blood was labeled immediately with radioisotopes and reinfused into the donor monkeys. The other ten blood units were stored at 4 C for 21 days, then tabled and infused into the donor monkeys.In vitrodeterminations were made immediately after collection and at the end of the storage period and compared with the results obtained in stored human blood.The ten fresh blood infusions had a mean survival of 101.3 per cent with an average half time of 10.4 days. The 21 (lay‐old bloods had a mean survival of 73.7 per cent (S.D. = 5.1%) with an average half time of 11.3 days. The average red blood cell survival of 123 human blood units stored 21 days and reinfused into their donors had an average red cell survival of 81.0 per cent (S.D. = 8.6%). The determinations in rhesus blood and human blood were comparable.These data strongly suggest thatin vivostudies done in the rhesus monkey may be substituted for those performed in man to evaluate red cell preservatio

A statistical study of the incidence and specificity of multiple irregular blood group antibodies shows predominance of those within the Rh‐Hr, Kell, and Duffy systems. When multiple antibodies included those in the Lewis, Lutheran, MNS, P, or Kidd systems, the other antibodies were usually in the Rh‐Hr, Kell, and Duffy systems.The following categories of donors: 1a Group O Rh‐neg. Severalin vitroplatelet function assays were examined. Two units of platelets from each of ten volunteer donors were obtained by plasmapheresis, stored three days, and examined by various functional parameters. The second unit of platelets from an individual had generally lower functional parameters than the first, suggesting a subtle physiological change in the donors' circulation between the time of drawing the first and second units. Forin vitrocomparisons, this difference was overcome by a pooling procedure. Platelet storage was examined at room temperature and at 4 C.

Papainized red blood cells and red blood cells sensitized with Rh antibodies were stored at 4 C in Alsever's solution containing inosine. Examples of both anti‐M and anti‐N have been reported in patients possessing these antigens; however, in only two instances has anti‐M been reported as an autoantibody. This paper describes two additional patients with auto anti‐M. In each case the anti‐M was shown to be an autoantibody by absorption and elution studies. Optimum reactivity was obtained at 4 C. The blood of a patient with infectious mononucleosis was investigated when a discrepancy was noted between cell and serum grouping. The red blood cells of the patient were reactive with a commercial anti‐B. Her serum strongly agglutinated group A and group B cells. Anti‐B from four other commercial sources and from ten normal group A donors did not agglutinate the patient's cells.The coloring material in the commercial anti‐B with which the patient's cells reacted is yellow #5 tartrazine. The patient's serum agglutinated normal group O cells on the addition of this dye. This brief communication shows how adoption of the Radio Immune Assay (RIA) test will increase outdating of blood and also increase the average age of blood used for transfusion. The results are based on the assumption that each test will take approximately one day and that a random draw issuing policy will be applied to both free and crossmatched blood.
