摘要:
Several preparations of a derivative of amylopectin (hydroxyethyl starch) have been shown not to be immunogenic in rabbits, guinea pigs and man. It appears from these studies that HES merits further investigation as a possible plasma expander provided it has no deleterious effects on soluble or cellular components of blood.

摘要:
The quantitative analysis of hemagglutination employing an electronic particle counter has been extended to the development of a two‐stage system for the study of agglutination of red cells sensitized by incomplete antibodies treated with antiglobulin serum. The agglutination of red cells in an anti‐Rho(D) system has been studied to demonstrate the relationship between such parameters as per cent agglutination, per cent two‐cell aggregates, and mean cell number per aggregate. Demonstrations of applications of this technic to such problems as the measurement of comparative potency and characterization of anti‐Rhosera, dosage effects, disaggregation patterns with antisera of different specificities, use of chain‐specific antiglobulin sera, and antiglobulin consumption studies

摘要:
The strength of the erythrocytic B antigens in South African Caucasian, Asiatic and Bantu donors was studied by a quantitative procedure. The mean strength of the B antigen in the Bantu was found to be considerably stronger than in the Caucasians and Asiatics. The Asiatics, while having a mean similar to the Caucasians, showed much more variance in the strength of B antigen than the other two races, having both the weakest and strongest antigens observed, stronger even than the strongest Bantu.

Of 181 South African Bantu subjects 27% were non‐secretors of ABH substance, and 25% of 171 were non‐secretors of Leasubstance; 54% had red cells of the Le(a‐b+) phenotype, 22% Le(a+b‐), and 23% Le(a‐b‐); 20% of this last group were non‐secretors of ABH substances. Among secretors of group O there was no correlation between the amount of H antigen on the red cells and the amount of H substance secreted in the saliva. Some findings for ABO and Lewis substances in the serum are presented

摘要:
Fresh platelet concentrates prepared with or without acidification of the platelet‐rich plasma were administered to 32 thrombocytopenic patients. A total of 122 transfusions were given including 60 of platelet concentrates from unmodified plasma and 62 of platelets prepared from acidified plasma.In vivoretrieval was calculated by two different and previously used formulas and found to be equivalent for acidified or nonacidified platelet concentrates by either method. Strict adherence to the details of the platelet separation technic is stressed and the possible significance of refrigeration during centrifugation is considered. Non‐modified platelet concentrates are therapeutically effective. They are also economically preferable since they can be obtained as by‐products of ordinary blood banking and do not prejudice the use of the plasma for separation of AHF cryoprecipi

摘要:
The rise in Factor VIII levels following paired infusions of cryoprecipitate prepared from normal and acidified plasma was studied in a group of patients with hemophilia A. In four of the six patients there was a greater than 50 per cent reduction in thein vivorecovery of Factor VIII following infusion of the acidified product. The pattern of Factor VIII disappearance over the first hour after infusion was similar in both groups. This implies that the loss in Factor VIII activity in cryoprecipitate prepared from acidified plasma cannot be restored followingin vivobuffering.

摘要:
Advancements in blood therapy during the past decade have indicated the need for a presterilized disposable cell washing system. Experimental and prototype developments indicate the feasibility of continuous washing for 1) removal of plasma protein from red cell masses, 2) deglycerolization of frozen red cells, 3) removal of cellular debris, and 4) separation of mixed cell populations.A new system has been designed to accomplish these separations. Initial studies indicate a thousandfold concentration reduction of initial supernate per liter of wash solution per unit of blood. Studies using isotopes and rates of dye removal formed the basis of further studies of programs utilizing deglycerolization and density gradient separation of cells. The basis for the development of the system and experimental results obtained from this system are defined.
