摘要:
Dilute ethanol-water solutions of a few polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a dioxin, and neat chlorinated solvents were sonicated and then characterized by UV-visible absorption spectrophotometry and laser excited Shpol'skii spectrometry. The results indicate that all the compounds were destroyed on sonication leaving a carbonaceous residue.

Indoor and outdoor air measurements of PM-10 (particulate massdp< 10 μm) and its benzo (a)pyrene (Bap) content were made daily in 13 residences and 5 nearby sites during one or more of three 14-day periods (Winters 1987 and 1988, and Fall 1988). These are a population of older homes (60+ years) adjacent to a gray-iron foundry. Winter BaP values were ∼ 10 × higher than fall values. Indoor BaP sources in several homes (e.g., cooking, cigarette smoke, a coal stove) led to contaminant levels higher than the ambient concentrations. However, in homes without strong sources, concentrations were very close to outdoor levels. Periods of elevated ambient pollution were readily discernible in the record of virtually all homes. Correlations for indoor-outdoor concentrations (PM-10 and BaP) were statistically significant (p < 0.01) in the majority of homes.

摘要:
The chromatographic performance of dicoronylene as a stationary phase in microcolumn liquid chromatography has been investigated. The performance has been compared to commercially available polymeric and monomeric octadecylsilica stationary phases. Similarities between polymeric octadecylsilica phases and dicoronylene are found in their planarity recognition capability for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This is explained by the planar structure of dicoronylene being able to recognize planar solutes in the liquid chromatographic environment, as explained by the “slot model” as proposed by Wiseet al.

摘要:
The number N(h,s) of nonbranched cata-condensed benzenoids, including helicenes and other out-of-plane systems, is discussed in terms of two parameters: total number h of benzenoid rings, and number s of benzenoid rings in the longest linearly condensed portion. Recurrence formulas for N(h,s) are demonstrated by Theorems 1 and 2 and implemented by means of a computer program. For h ≤ 2s − 1, an explicit formula for N(h,s) is proved by Theorem 3; in this case, N(h,s) no longer depends separately on h and s, but only on the difference h − s.
