摘要:
AbstractThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has developed regulations under the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments (HSWA) of 1984 to restrict the land disposal of hazardous wastes. As a result of the regulations, all hazardous wastes to be placed on the land must meet treatment standards based on the performance of the best demonstrated available technology (BDAT) identified for individual waste classifications. The Marathon Oil Company is currently evaluating innovative technologies for managing listed waste materials, with a focus on waste minimization and recycling. Remediation Technologies, Inc. (ReTeC) has conducted testing on wastewater treatment sludges from three Marathon refineries using a proprietary thermal desorption technology. The results from these tests have demonstrated that the technology has the ability to consistently meet BDAT treatment standards, while preferentially separating and condensing residual moisture and oils from the material.

摘要:
AbstractA new technique has been developed to immobilize organic chemicals at a Superfund site. In the course of predesign studies in preparing the Remedial Design for the Pioneer Sand Superfund site in Pensacola, Florida, a light, nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) was discovered floating on the groundwater within the on‐site landfill. The liquid, with a viscosity similar to SAE 20 motor oil, was made up of heavy organic chemicals and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), but no pesticides or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The volatiles present included toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes. Regulatory agencies expressed concern over the possibility of LNAPL migration and asked that a method of LNAPL immobilization be devise

摘要:
AbstractThe development of treatment technologies to limit the discharge of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere has proceeded apace with the increasing use of soil venting for the remediation of contaminated soil. This article surveys the commonly‐used emission control systems that have developed under air pollution control regulations in California. Emphasis is on equipment operating characteristics, typical performance results (destruction efficiencies of VOCs), and operating costs. A recently commercialized process for treating halogen‐containing VOCs is described, and some operating and cost data are inclu

摘要:
AbstractA new process for enhancing in‐situ remediation of low‐permeability soil and rock formations is presently under development at the Hazardous Substance Management Research Center (HSMRC). The patented process, known as „pneumatic fracturing,”︁ consists of injecting high‐pressure air or other gas into contaminated geologic formations at controlled flow rates and pressures. In fine‐grained soils such as clay, pneumatic fracturing creates conductive channels in the formation, thereby increasing the permeability and exposed surface area of the contaminated soil. The potential benefits of pneumatic fracturing are significant, since in‐situ remedial technologies are essentially limited by the pore gas exchange rate of the soil being treated. This article describes the results of a recent demonstration of pneumatic fracturing at an industrial site to enhance a volatile organic compound (VOC) extraction system. After establishing the baseline removal rate of soil gas effluent from the clay, soil surrounding the extraction system was fractured to enhance VOC with drawal. A substantial improvement in the VOC removal rate was observed, including: (1) flush effluent concentrations that increased up to 200 times; and (2) air flows in the formation that increased up

摘要:
AbstractTwenty years of waste disposal operations at the Conservation Chemical Company (CCC) site in Kansas City, Missouri, led to contamination of soils and groundwater on a six‐acre site. As a result of this contamination, the site was listed on the federal government's National Priorities List.Following extensive litigation initiated in 1982, more than 200 contributors to the site (Potentially Responsive Parties or PRPs), CCC's insurance companies, and the government ultimately reached a settlement to fund the remedial action. The remedy that was agreed upon included: (1) a permeable cap to allow water intrusion to assist groundwater cleanup; (2) a with drawal well system to achieve an inward groundwater gradient; and (3) a groundwater treatment system employing several unit operations. Containment of the contaminated plume relied on hydraulic, rather than structural, containment to prevent mitigation of contaminants from the site. ABB Environmental Services, Inc. (ABB‐ES) was retained to perform treatability tests and to design, construct, and start up the groundwater treatment plant after the installation of the permeable cap by oth

摘要:
AbstractA variety of process byproducts and residues were reclaimed at the Brio Refining Superfund site, an abandoned jet fuel refinery located near Houston, Texas. Among the operations that took place at the site were regeneration of acrylonitrile synthesis catalysts, styrene reprocessing still bottoms to recover ethylbenzene, and the attempted reclamation of 1,2‐dichloroethane from vinyl chloride process residues. Incoming process byproducts and residues were stored in unlined impoundments before reclamation, until the Texas Air Control Board had the impoundments closed under court order in 1979. After the pits were closed, two pilot‐scale bioremediation demonstrations were performed on the backfilled impoundments. The results of these studies indicated that bioremediation of the organic residues and affected soils at the site was included as an acceptable treatment technology in the Record of Decision. This article compares the degradation rates achieved by the two different biological treatment processes used to treat the organic material in the impoundme
