摘要:
Abstract:Facility location and customer allocation problems are pervasive in industry and in the private sector. In this paper, we outline a new approach to solving these problems that avoids the need to resort to integer programming techniques. The approach exploits the mathematical structure of the problem as well as characteristics frequently found in applied location/allocation problems. Using this approach, large scale problems are readily solvable on personal computers. We illustrate the approach on a small example and provide computational results based on a real‐world application of the technique. Extensions to include additional problem features are also discusse

摘要:
Abstract:This paper presents a novel numerical model for the dynamic simulation of a rockfall prevention fence using the discrete element method (DEM). An approximate two‐dimensional DEM model provides the basis for an efficient numerical technique for solving three‐dimensional fence‐rock dynamic impact situations. It is shown that the computational results can provide the structural engineer with quantitative information concerning the overall fence design parameters. The dynamics simulation software was developed on an Intel based CPU 80486 microcomputer. This hardware environment was also used to perform the dynamic analyses which are described h

摘要:
Abstract:Spline Interpolation is a numerical procedure which is widely used to contour variables from irregularly spaced data. It has been shown that, under specific criteria, Spline Interpolation is equivalent to a well known estimation technique known as Kriging. Unlike Kriging, Spline Interpolation does not require a preliminary structural analysis. However, as a result, one should expect that the estimates obtained from Spline Interpolation are not as accurate as those obtained from Kriging. This paper examines the role of the Spline Interpolation technique in the prediction of pore‐water pressures in limit equilibrium slope stability analyses. The pore‐water pressures of interest are those at the base of a slice when the factor of safety is estimated using the method of slices and limit equilibrium techniques. The results of the study show that the Spline Interpolation technique is more accurate than the 4‐Way Interpolation technique. However, the Spline Interpolation technique requires significant computing time and computer memory. As a result, the number of known data points which can be analyzed (on a microcomputer) within a slope stability computer program is somewhat li

摘要:
Abstract:A parallel direct method for finite element analysis based on nested dissection is presented. It exploits all the parallelism provided by nested dissection and can be implemented on local‐memory multiprocessors. Computations are carried out at substructure level with less communication between processors. The relation of nested dissection to hypercubes is discussed and the relevant parallel algorithm is proposed. Parallel nonlinear finite element analysis is also given. The efficiency is estimated. Numerical experiments and engineering applications were conducted on a multitransputer system and very high efficiency was achieve

摘要:
Abstract:A simple finite element method, based on the analogy with a beam on an elastic foundation, has been developed and applied to the analysis of track structures subjected to point or uniformly distributed loads, A technique for treating infinitely long tracks by using an equivalent model of finite length has also been developed and incorporated into the analysis. Variations in track and/or foundation properties along the Length of the track are easily handled in the proposed method. The entire analysis can be conveniently programmed to run on a microcomputer, and with a few elements gives fast and accurate results. Important parameters are identified and their effects on the results discussed.

摘要:
Abstract:In this paper, seawater or contaminant intrusion into fresh groundwater in lowland areas is treated as a mass transfer problem in infinite media. For numerical simulation of such problem, a transient infinite element model has been presented to simulate the mass transfer process in infinite media. The main merit of using the present transient finite and infinite element coupled model is that the numerical analysis of contaminant transport problems in infinite media can be carried out using microcomputers. The comparison of the present numerical results with the previous analytical results indicates the accuracy, efficiency and effectiveness of the present infinite element.
