AbstractThe radium cumulation inCoelastrum cambricum, Scenedesmus obliquusandMicrocystis pulvereawas studied under conditions of continuous cultivation at constant level of radium in the cultivation medium. The algae were exposed to the concentrations of 30, 300 and 3000 Bq/l226Ra in the medium for a period of 14 days. It was found that radium started to cumulate immediately after its addition to the culture just as in the stationary type of cultivation, in the continuous cultivation, however, its content decreased with the length of exposure. This is due to the decreasing part of radium adsorbed on the cell surface. While in green algae the portion of radium incorporated into cells increased with the length of exposure, in blue‐green algae up to 90% of radium was bound to the surface or gelatinous capsules of the cells through out the experiment. With the three phytoplankton species used, the highest cumulation of radium (nonwashable part) was recorded inCoelastrum cambricum.A dependence of the radium cumulation on its content in the medium was observed in the speciesScenedesmus obliquu

AbstractAn Hand eines Stickstoffkreislaufes, der die allochthone Zufuhr und autochthone Produktion berücksichtigt, werden die Reaktionen des Stickstoffs im Gewässer erläutert. Eliminierungsmöglichkeiten für den Stickstoff sind die Nitratassimilation, Denitrifikation und die Nahrungskette. Auf die Stickstoffumsetzungen haben vor allem der Gehalt des im Wasser gelösten Sauerstoffs, die Konzentration der Stickstoffverbindungen, Temperatur, pH‐Wert und Fremdstoffe Einfluß. Organische Verbindungen, insbesondere stickstoffhaltige, wirken auf die Nitrifikation oft inhibierend.Die Stickstoffkomponenten haben für die Gewässernutzungen unterschiedliche Bedeutung. Beschränkungen bestehen vor allem für die Trinkwasserverwendung. Durch hohe Ammoniumgehalte aus Einleitungen und Ammonifikation organischer Verbindungen kann infolge Nitrifikation der Sauerstoffhaushalt der Gewässer zusätzlich beansprucht werden.Für fischereiliche Belange wirkt vor allem der Ammoniumionengehalt begrenzend, der u. U. zu Produktionsverlusten führen kann. In der Nitrationenform ist die Stickstoffbelastung eines fließenden Gewässers am leichtesten vertretbar. Die Modellierung der Stickstoffumsetzungen ist derzeit nur für Teilprozesse möglich.In Gewässern werden im wesentlichen vier Gruppen von Stickstoffverbindungen unterschieden: Ammonium‐, Nitrit‐ und Nitrationen sowie organische Stickstoffverbindungen. AbstractDie Adsorption von Methylenblau, Methylorange und Tartrazin an Magnesiumhydroxid in wäßriger Phase wurde unter verschiedenen Fällungsbedingungen untersucht. Adsorptionsisothermen konnten ermittelt werden. Die anionischen Farbstoffe Methylorange und Tartrazin wurden besser adsorbiert als das kationische Methylenblau. Durch Auswertung nach der Langmuir‐Gleichung konnten die maximal adsorbierte Masse Farbstoff und die spezifische Oberfläche des Hydroxids bei verschiedenen Fällbedingungen abgeschätzt werden. AbstractDie Auswahl des Modells ist für den Erfolg der mathematischen Modellierung eines limnischen Ökosystems von entscheidender Bedeutung. Da Ökosysteme im allgemeinen nichtlineare Systeme sind, deren wesentliche Einflußgrößen durch stochastische Störungen überlagert sind, bereitet die experimentelle Modellbildung oftmals große Schwierigkeiten. Andererseits erstreckt sich eine theoretische Modellbildung meist über mehrere Jahre, so daß eine Anwendung des Modells zur Vorhersage des Ökosystemverhaltens innerhalb kurzer Zeit nicht möglich ist.Bei einer geeigneten Linearisierung des Ökosystems ist es jedoch möglich, die in der technischen Kybernetik mit Erfolg angewendeten linearen Identifikationsverfahren auch auf ökologische Fragestellungen anzuwenden. AbstractThe metabolism of inorganic mercury has been studied in stationary cultures of planktonic algaeChlorella kessleri, Scenedesmus obliquusandMicrocystis incertathat were exposed for 14 days to the concentration of 2 × 10−7M of Hg(II). Individual chemical forms of mercury were determined in algae and in the culture medium at regular intervals.All the studied phytoplankton species started to metabolize mercury immediately after its application, with the exception of the blue‐green algaMicrocystis incerta.The accumulation of mercury proceeds without interruption till the end of the experiment. After a 14 days cultivation about 60… 80% of added mercury was present in algal cells and the portion of mercury washable from the cell surface did not exceed 2%. It was found that more than 99,5% of mercury in cultivation medium and more than 99,5% of mercury in algae was present in the form of Hg(II). AbstractAn attempt has been made to study the toxicity of two commonly used pesticides aldrin (organochlorine) and ethyl‐parathion (organophosphorus) to the fishColisa fasciatus(Anabantidae) andNotopterus notopterus(Notopteridae).During bioassay studies, the behaviour of the fishes was recorded. The aldrin concentration used lies between 0.021 mg/1 and 0.042 mg/1 forC. fasciatusand 0.00056 mg/1 and 0.00135 mg/1 forN. notopterus.The ethyl‐parathion concentration used lies between 1.8 mg/1 and 3.7 mg/1 forC. fasciatusand 0.49 mg/1 and 1.00 mg/1 forN. notopterus.–The effect of lethal aqueous concentrations of pesticides on the Fishes prior to death are usually manifested by excitation, erratic swimming ability, difficulty in respiration, increasing in ventilation rate, jerky movements of body and fin fast, up‐ and downward movements, convulsions, loss of equilibrium, loss of the original colour of the body skin and the excess secretion of mucus by the gills and the body wall.–the TLmvalues for 24, 48 and 96 hours of exposition are determined for both species of fish and both pesticides at the following variables:•three levels of temperature,•three levels of dissolved oxygen,•three levels of pH,•three fish sizes.–statistical analysis of variance shows, that all variables have a significant effect on the TLmvalues of both pesticides for both fish species;–Aldrin (chlorinated hydrocarbon) is more toxic than ethylparathion (organophosphate) at all variables;–Colisa fasciatusis the more resistant species thanNotopterus notopterus.–the relationship between the total number of the fishesN0, survival numbersNand timetcan be expressed by a mathematical formula as:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Log}\frac{N}{{N_0 }} = kt; $$\end{document}–the harmless concentration toC. fasciatusranged from 0.0049 mg/1 to 0.0161 for aldrin, 0.54 mg/1 to 0.99 mg/1 for ethyl‐parathion and toN. notopterusfrom 0.00012 mg/1 to 0.00045 mg/1 for aldrin, 0.10 mg/1 to 0.21 mg/1 for ethyl‐parathion;–the aldrin should be diluted at least 4000 times and ethyl‐parathion 32

AbstractChanges in the number of bacteria, radioactivity of the seston and the assimilation or radiocarbon byChydorus sphaericusover a period of 59 days were studied under aerobic agnotobiotic conditions after the addition of14C‐glycine. The highest numbers of bacteria, radioactivity of the seston and radiocarbon assimilation byChydrous spharicuswere observed on the second day after the experiment had begun. The results show that heterotrophic bacteria occupy a central position in the transport of matter from DOM to animal secondary producers.Organically bound carbon is mostly present in aquatic environments in the form of dissolved compounds. Most of this dissolved organic matter (DOM) usually originates form extracellular products of photosynthesis and from allochthonous organic materials. It is also released with the excretions of secondary producers and by the degradation and decomposition of organisms after death.Fractionated filtration revealed that about 25% of the dissolved organic carbon in limnic and coastal waters is formed by the fraction with a molecular weight of less than 500 (Allen;OGURA). Compounds such as free amino acids, acetate, monosaccharides and glycollate were generally found in concentrations of less than 100 μg/1 (SIEGELandDEGENS;WETZEL;VACCAROet al.;ANDEREWSandWILLIAMS;AL‐HASANet al.). Compunds with a low molecular weight are particularly accessible to biological degradation and must thus be regarded as potential sources of matter for organisms.It has been known sinceWRIGHTandHOBBIEperformed their fundamental studies using glucose and acetate that especially the heterotrophic bacteria are able to incorporate such compounds even at concentrations below 10 μg/1. More recent investigations have revealed that such compounds can still be incorporated at concentrations as low as 0.05 μg/1 (PAERLandGOLDMAN) and that not only heterotrophic bacteria but also fungi are in a position to incorporate such materials at equally low substrate concentrations (PAERL). AbstractIn Laboratoriumsmodellen wird der Einfluß verschiedener Faktoren auf die Hydrolyse von Harnstoff in verunreinigtem Flußwasser unter teilweiser Einbeziehung anderer Stickstoffumsetzungen untersucht. Nach einer Hemmphase von 5… 7 d laufen der Abbau des Harnstoffs und die Nitrifikation des entstehenden Ammoniums gleichzeitig ab. Die Abbaugeschwindigkeit des Harnstoffs folgt im unteren Konzentrationsbereich einer Reaktion. 1. Ordnung (k= 0,58 d−1bei 20 °C). Die Aktivierungsenergie beträgt etwa 20 kcal/mol Harnstoff.
