AbstractMonitoring and evaluation of groundwater quality in drinking water protectorates is of particular interest if the uncontrolled entry of pollutants, for example by infiltrating river water, cannot be excluded. A fluorescence spectroscopic method is presented as possible alternative to the conventional expensive hydrochemical investigations. This method uses the information yielded by synchronous fluorescence spectra. After a Fourier transformation of the original spectra and a following discriminant analysis, the samples can be classified in different groups corresponding to the different types of groundwater. The method was tested in the drinking water protectorate of a waterworks of a German metropolis (Halle, Sachsen‐Anhalt). We found a prediction rate of about 90% in the investigated cas

AbstractA survey was conducted to determine the status of pollution of surficial sediments in the Elbe catchment area (Germany, Czech Republic) for the period 1992 to 1994. Chlorinated benzenes, PCBs, DDT and its metabolites, and HCH isomers were determined by GC/ECD following a simultaneous steam distillation‐extraction procedure. Most of the investigated compounds showed increased concentration levels in sections of the Elbe or its main tributaries exceeding the target value II (quality criteria ARGE Elbe). AbstractNach der Substitution des früher marktbeherrschenden Distearyldimethylammoniumchlorids (DSDMAC) in Deutschland durch drei neue Wirkstoff‐Typen auf Esterbasis, den Imidazolin‐Ester, die Esterquats und die Diesterquats, stellen sich der Gewässeranalytik neue Aufgaben. Denn diese drei ähneln im IR‐Spektrum und in ihrem chromatographischen Verhalten mehr oder weniger den natürlicherweise vorkommenden Fettsäure‐estern. Es wird über den Einsatz der IR‐Spektroskopie, ihren Nutzen im Sinne des Fingerprinting‐Prinzips, der Stoffidentifizierung über funktionelle Gruppen und die Verfolgung von analytischen Umsetzungen berichtet. Bei letzterer geht es um die Bildung von Salzen mit analytisch gut detektierbaren Anionen, das Clean‐up und die spektroskopische Endbestimmung. Während das DSDMAC 1994 noch in Konzentrationen von 10…20 mg/kg in den Schwebstoffen des Mittelrheins nachweisbar war, lag die Konzentration der Substitute 1995 unter der Nachweisgrenze von

AbstractExplosives belonging to the group of nitrotoluenes may be readily extracted with C18 adsorbent in the off‐line mode and also in on‐line coupling of the extraction unit to HPLC, while polar explosives like hexyl, HMX, and RDX show a substantial breakthrough and low recoveries. However, these compounds are quantitatively extracted using a new polymeric phase, LiChrolut EN, in the off‐line mode. Preliminary results show that this new adsorbent may in principle also be used in the on‐line mode for explosives. In this case, the cartridges have to be eluted in the backflush mode.
